Orchid8 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 So my friend is on this online dating site and forwarded a few pics of a guy she is currently talking to and asked for my opinion. I think he is a fairly attractive man, clean cut and has an average body (not entirely in great shape). And although I think he is attractive, something about the pics is a turn off for me. For one, all his pics are shirtless ones in the mirror. To be honest, I am not diggin the whole shirtless guy taking a pic of himself in the mirror (not just one but several)! It screams cheesy? Maybe it's just me. She doesn't seem to mind it because she wants to know what she has to look forward to. LOL Anyway, do pics really say a thousand words? Is this guy cheesy if he sends her these types of pics?

Is this guy cheesy if he sends her these types of pics? I've always found guys like this to be after only one thing. They are advertising their bodies for a reason, not their personalities, their individuality, etc. Their bodies. It may just be me, but if your friend is looking to seriously date him, I would advise she passes on this one. Chances are, he'll have rude pictures of himself and will try and send her those sometime too. Just my experience. Yes, it's cheesy.
Ruby Slippers Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 They are advertising their bodies for a reason, not their personalities, their individuality, etc. Their bodies. Yes. If she is just looking to get some, fine. But I wouldn't consider him as a serious prospect. Whatever happened to a person revealing their assets gradually, leaving some sexy new details to look forward to?

hoping2heal Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 most shirtless guys are morons You can say that again. It's a little hard to respect a man who does that. No wait, it's REALLY hard to respect a man who does that. You can't take it seriously. It's right up there with flashing 20's, wearing bandanas over their mouth, trying to play up the "army man" angle, etc. They look like clowns.

CaliGuy Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 It's no different than the 1BILLION photos of girls online with their boobs sticking out through low cut shirts or in a bikini. What's the difference? Women do it, men do it. The MAIN reason is they are not confident their personality is enough to attract the right significant other so they use the only thing they have they think is of value -- their body. FWIW, I have a shirtless pic. Know where it's from? When I was playing in a tribute band. The guys part I was playing plays shirtless so I had to go shirtless. No big deal really. It's only a big deal if most/all of their photos are shirtless -- or the only pics they have on a PUBLIC dating site.
Satisfaction Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I think guys who pose like that are just looking for adoration for all the time they spent in the gym. Probably best to avoid guys like that. However ifthat's what she wants right now, just some random hot guy between her thighs she will probably go ahead anyway.

Rainman760 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 These shirtless wonders are posting these pictures projecting what they find stimulating when looking at pictures in womens' profiles and assuming that girls will be tantalized in a similar way. What they don't get is that it rarely impresses women who are much more substantive when 'reading' a profile as opposed to men who look at the pictures and then (maybe) read the profile! I'm sure they're out there but I can't ever remember hearing a woman say that it wasn't cheesy and was actually a plus.

How did I miss it? Doesn't answer all my questions and makes me ask some more but very useful nonetheless very helpful. Thank you!

What questions didn't it answer? Can't update it (archived I believe) but I can answer directly via PM if you have specific questions.

I agree, some guys love themselves just a little too much, and they expect women to love their bodies as much as they do... But...I'm inferring from your post that you think any guy who works hard at the gym (and it shows...), whether it's for personal growth, career, or just fun, is only capable of being a "random hot guy" between some girl's thighs... Perhaps I am mistaken...?

Why should they change, when it obviously works very well? Never seen it work for guys with an average build, just musclemen.

Perhaps I am mistaken...? Guys who have really nice above average bodies are generally the male version of vanity. A lot of guys I know who work out at the gym have no real practical strength from it (like you would from a body that you get while working farms or construction for example) and half of the time their muscles are full of water due to over use of creatine. Very few healthy weight guys go to the gym as "personal growth" , most of the time its to get more female attention, hence why at the gym you see the typical douche bag working out the same 1 or 2 muscles that women can see through a tight t shirt.

Perhaps I am mistaken...? I would think so! Any guy that takes a topless pic in front of the mirror is someone who feels the need to impress women with just his physique because he has nothing else to offer. He's just another airheaded guy that I wouldn't take seriously because he doesn't take himself seriously. That's just my opinion.

Right I'm sure you've never looked factored in a man's body into whether you will date him or not. If a guy wants to have a one night stand with a woman, having a very nice body and showing it off shirtless is definitely going to get you where you want to be faster than writing about how you love long walks on the beach and candle lit dinners Women will deny it in public, but when they get home and nobody's looking send Guido's profile a "wink"/respond to his message.

No, I meant the ones that don't need to rely on just shirtless pictures or shirtlessness in general to attract women...their shirtlessness might just be a bonus...but you wouldn't know it unless you met them in person...the post I commented on before just seemed to imply that if you are proud of the work you put into yourself physically, you are just another airheaded guy...whether you put up shirtless pics or not... Guys who have really nice above average bodies are generally the male version of vanity. You bring up a very good point...and I definitely agree with you...it is certainly a reason why a lot of men and women go to the gym...to make themselves more attractive to the opposite sex...but should those individuals (male and female) who are so vain as to need to show the world of their shirtlessness ruin it for everyone else who uses fitness as another appealing character trait...? To loosely paraphrase you, 'oh, he works out...he must be a douche...'

Can't argue with this. But come on, people don't think the act of fitness is that appealing, just the results. If it was about fitness itself nobody would get muscle implants. To loosely paraphrase you, 'oh, he works out...he must be a douche...'[/Quote] I disagree and didnt say that. I work out too but its not for looks its to be strong in a situation that requires physical violence.
Stung Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 ... generally the male version of vanity... Vanity is not a trait ascribable solely to females. There is no male or female version of vanity. There is simply vanity, which is experienced by many, many men and women alike.

If it was about fitness itself nobody would get muscle implants. I also agree with you here...personally, I HATE the gym...but once I started seeing results, I couldn't stop...or else all my hard work and progress would just go to waste...and fitness is also part of my job...so I do it...but not with a smile on my face... I disagree and didnt say that. I work out too but its not for looks its to be strong in a situation that requires physical violence. Fair enough. Withdrawn. But I'm sure it's an attitude that many people will have...

Knittress Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I personally couldn't click with someone like that. Differently emphasized values, or whatever. I just wanted to chime in about much those shirtless-dudes crack me up in thinking that the sort of tactics which appeal to them work on women - when they're far more likely to attract the interest of gay men. The next time they see a boob-shot profile and get all horny I wonder if it'll occur to them... no, it probably wouldn't. :>)
