I heard of people meeting their significant other out of the blue i.e. when they weren't looking to date and just enjoying life with family and friends. My friend says its mostly luck.

Does anybody believe in love at first sight?

That's just a rumor counterman.

I'm still waiting for it to happen to me  ... but yes, I sort of believe that's how it works. I know the times I've fallen the hardest is when I wasn't even looking to date anybody...

It does happen.

Happened with the last girlfriend...there was just something about her :) I couldn't pinpoint it...

OnlyJake, so I take it that you don't believe in it? How come?

I'm the same with you tkgirl. I've fallen pretty hard when I wasn't looking to date.

I was still getting over this girl who said she just wanted to be friends with me. Took my a month to get over and I spent over a year just focusing on my studies and just hanging out with my mates. I knew my ex for a while and seen her around quite a bit as well before and never really spoke to her much but, one day, I don't know what happened, I felt this urge to talk to her and it just happened. Did not turn out great though.

I'm not quite sure if I believe in love at first sight though. I do believe in fate though.

I agree that it's possible to meet someone when you're not looking too. Of course I do.

I absolutely don't believe in love at first sight. That's lust, not love. There is no way it is possible to truly love someone you don't know. "True" love involves a decision and a commitment, which can't (or shouldn't) be made without knowing more about who the person is, what they believe, what their goals are, what their faults are, etc.

It certainly can happen, especially if you are the kind of person who is very socially active, has a huge circle of friends and meets lots of new people in informal settings. But I still wouldn't count on it. People who advise you to stop looking and "let love find you" are giving terrible advice.

I think it happens all the time. But I also think that 99.9999999999% of people take a very long while to realise it.

Sure, it can happen. Happened to me when I met my BF last summer. It wasn't love at first sight, exactly, as it took him over 3 months to capture my attention... but once he did, I quickly realized how great he is and we've been going strong ever since.

I used to get very irritated by the people who said "it'll happen when you're least expecting it / not looking for it" because it's not like you can sit in your living room and wait for a knock on the door. Then again, that's kind of how it happened for me. I had been looking and looking for the right guy via online dating sites, and eventually got so frustrated with that that I declared an indefinite dating hiatus. I refocused on family, friends, hobbies, and work, and forgot about men for awhile - it was great. :p And that's when I met my BF.

I think it depends on a few things.

If you are the type of person who falls very quickly and say to yourself “it was love at first sight” with several people, I think then that has more to do with lust.

There's lust at first sight, which can turn into love.

But I think love at first sight, is different. Where the lust aspect develops afterwards.

The love at first sight feels very different. Its not something where you say to yourself when you first meet, “I love him/her” because you can't possibly. But you can feel a certain level of closeness and fondness towards the person when you are together that feels very different from physical attraction. If you have experienced both, you will notice there is a very distinct difference.

I think it happens to people who believe in it. So it definitely won't happen to me... I simply can't imagine this.

I do believe that you can have instant attraction to someone. Although every time i've had that happen to me (3 times) its almost always because they subconsciously remind me of something from from my childhood or past. One guy was called the same thing one of my uncles used to call me when I was a child. i didn't find out till years and years later about that nickname.

Agreed. Maybe I could do love at first "hearing. If that makes sense. Intelligence impresses me more than looks.

no not really

Not to get all technical here, but, the OP combined two distinct ideas into one: finding someone when you're not looking, and "love at first sight". They're two different ideas- the first has definitely happened to me; the second not-so-much; I've had "lust" at first sight, and I agree with Sharla on this:

I agree that you cannot truly love someone at first sight. I mean it will take sometime developing a rapport with someone and have your feelings and intimacy grow. Though, I have heard people say they love someone when they just first met them but it's usually in correlation to their physical appearance. So, maybe lust at first sight? There's also the case with meeting someone who you feel as though you know them already and turns out that they are just what you imagined they would be (in a good way).

Then, there's the idea that you don't realise your feelings for someone until your relationship develops i.e. you don't know it's love until you actually develop the feelings. But again, it isn't true love at first.

Thank you sunshinegirl for pointing that out. I may have combined two ideas. I was going for the idea of meeting someone that you fall for, and therefore "love at first sight", when you just see them for the first time. Like you, when I haven't been looking for someone and just coasting, I met a girl who I did end up loving. But, as for "love" at first sight? Not yet. Don't think it'll ever happen.

I don't believe in the advice of stop looking and let love find you. I reckon opportunities do present themselves whether they're slight ones or not and it's up to me to take them and be proactive about them.

Chemistry/attraction/lust at first sight...absolutely. Love? No way!! Come on, that's just ridiculous. You can't LOVE somebody without truly knowing them. The first time I met my boyfriend I felt something special between us and knew he was somebody I wanted to get to know. But is that initial attraction and chemistry "love"? Of course not.
