I have the flu and I'm home sick from work today. I have been sitting on my butt in sweat pants all day. I'm feeling gross, lethargic and a little down. I'm considering hopping on my treadmill for a while, even for just a brisk walk. Is that a good idea? Will it delay my recovery? I absolutely have to go to work tomorrow and I have important plans this weekend so I need to be better asap.

Save your strength when you have the flu, since your body has enough to fight. If you only had a minor cold, there's no reason not to work out.

It's more than a minor cold, a cold doesn't slow me down :laugh: I think it's more of a flu because I had chills, a fever and aches on top of a cold and cough. Right now I'm feeling a little better, but I think that may be the dayquil masking my symptoms.

I had the same symptoms last week and I still worked out on my treamill everyday- I just kept it lighter than normal.

I just toned it down to 20 min instead of 30-40- and I walked fast instead of running. I don't think it hurt me at all- and I kept hydrated.:rolleyes:

Working out depletes your body of nutrients, which can hinder your recovery. If you're not eating as much as usual (like most people who are sick) then you're not going to be able to replace those nutrients.

 

So not only will your condition probably get worse, the work out is wasted. I wouldn't advise working out. Drink lots of natural juice and sleep as much as you can stand. If you feel like you need to do something fitness related, take a warm bath and sweat it out - just make sure you drink a lot.

 

Last time I was sick I was able to cut my recovery time down by about 2 days on a sickness that usually lasts about 5. I sat in the hot tube, sweat my ass off and then drank like 12 of those 'Naked Juice' drinks over the course of the rest of the day. Felt great afterward. Might make you feel better as well.

 

Sweat it out and replenish, rinse and repeat.

NO, it is not a good idea. I work out 4 times a week and I run. I am experienced. You will only drain yourself even further. Plus, if you go to the gym you are going to spread this. Stay home and get some rest.

 

If you are trying to sweat it out, drink lots of Gatorade, dress overly warm, pile on the blankets and heating pad and keep hydrated, hydrated, hydrated.

I'd say no. The idea that you can 'sweat your cold out' is a complete myth. Give yourself some recovery time.
