mem11363 Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I have 3 kids. The boy has a giant conscience and concern about treating others fairly and helping others in distress. His sisters - not so much. I am NOT making a generalization about genders here - just our family. We teach all 3 the same rules of right/wrong - yes in church - still the boy does the right thing without prompting and the girls not so much. He could be raised without religion and would simply do the right thing because he follows the golden rule. The girls seem to have a hard time doing so despite all the religious education they have gotten. It's called a conscience! People without religion in their life aren't bereft of moral guidance!
TaraMaiden Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I'll be honest with you - some of the meanest, nastiest, vindictive, sadistic and cruel people I have ever known, have purported to be religious, to the point of representing and supposedly teaching so-called core values of religion. Some people called them 'Devil Incarnate'. others called them 'spawn of Satan'. Other people again, called them 'Nuns. I spent 5 years of my life being supposedly educated by such women. I have no respect for their memory, and cannot believe for one instant they had God in their heart. Goodness? Conscience? Moral Guidance? Gimme a break.....

I'm sorry to hear you had such a negative experience with them. I've known a number of nuns and other religious in my life, and out of the ones I've met they seemed almost universally to be extremely caring and considerate people. If you met some that were mean and vindictive, the question would be are they that way because of religion, or would they have been even worse without it? Then too, there are an awful lot of mean and vindictive people who are not religious. Scott
