How come a woman like you is still single? Some good answers to this question?

As I was mentioning this horrible question in another topic, I actually thought I should start a thread about it. This question has been asked to me already several times in my life, and it really makes me go bananas. Because I feel that however you react to this question, you are already cornered. Even saying that you don't want to answer it, makes you come across as frustrated. :(

I think it also hits a nerve for me because I don't want to be single but I have been for many years with some short relationships in between but they were always disappointing. The men in question never met my needs. That of course makes me think that I am either too picky or that I am just attracting the wrong men. It's a very sensitive subject for me as I would like to be in a relationship but the older I get, the more powerless I feel. I have the feeling it is just not for me and I don't understand why.

Are there some people who have suggestions of whitty, ad rem answers to this stupid question. I have already thought of returning the question if the one who asks it is married, and ask him/her how on earth a man/woman like them is married.

I hate that question! Already, off the bat it's implied that something must be wrong with you, at least it makes me feel that way.

A guy sent me a message on a dating site the other day saying he'd been on and off the site for 4 years and I was always there, so obviously I was too picky or something else was wrong! What realistically can you say to that?

I don't know how you answer the question, I usually just say I haven't found anyone that interests me- but of course that answer makes me seem picky or bitchy.

I hear you! I also always get the feeling like the fact that I am single makes me disabled or something.

I don't want to be in a relationship just for the sake of it. I am looking for someone who makes me happy and that I can make happy. I have some standards but I think they are realistic ones. And I don't want to date someone a lot older than me and less educated than I am. For the rest I'm pretty flexible.

There are plenty of people with nasty characters who are married. If being married meant that one is a great person, there would not be a lot of people married...

I always took it as a compliment, laughed it off and answered 'thank you'... And that was that.

Then again, I've never minded being single.

Truthfully, what contributed to changing my marital status was changing how I perceived the dynamic of relationships. I developed a sense of humor about my path.
