i dunno, i got a feeling if a lot of women, who say they wouldnt be turned off by a male nurse, saw a single male nurse who works trauma get out of his mercedes sl55 AMG they would prolly change their minds....

Some people might think its feminine, but there are lots of guys who get into Culinary Arts . I mean is that NOT more common than Nursing??

I don't have any data on that but for whatever it is worth, my father was a nurse.

Really, I would have no problem if a guy was a nurse. Yes, nurse has the stereotype of being a "woman's" occupation, but there was also a time when a doctor was always expected to be a man.

That's a really good point, I wonder how many men would into a woman who works construction for a living?

Yep, my thoughts exactly.

By the way, anyone seen the movie "Meet The Parents". I just remembered this famous quote:

Jack Byrnes: Greg's in medicine too.

Bob Banks: What field?

Greg ****er: Nursing.

Bob Banks: Ha ha ha ha. No, really, what field are you in?

Greg ****er: Nursing.

yeah exactly. A lot of professions are having gender barriers broken. At one time there were no women politicians, attorneys, business persons, firefighters, mechanics, etc. Now there are plenty of women in those fields, and I wouldn't have a problem with a woman in a traditionally "male" field.

I would say the reverse should be true, as in male nurses, but to the original poster, do what you want. I think you're probably going to turn down a possibly good person for something silly, but do what you want.

Good point.

I think it is the word Nurse that is the turn off trigger since nurse sounds feminine. Like someone else pointed out, there isn't really anything overtly feminine about the actual duties of a nurse.

Some of the women in this thread should challenge themselves to have a more open mind.

Yeah, I'm sure it has a lot to do with the name.

In fact.. I think it would rather be a turn-on... :bunny:

I've seen really HOT male nurses ... they are not one bit effiminated... they are manly and sexy...

It's rare for me to agree with Lizzie wholeheartedly, but here I do.

I've known some really hot male nurses in my day, men who were also educated, compassionate, and making good money. I can't imagine why such a combination would be a turn-off.

Maybe it's the old belief that a nurse essentially just wiped foreheads and azzes and held hands? The nurses I know mostly have RNs and Master's degrees in Nursing and/or Biology or Biochem, they work hard and know their stuff and if my own experience is any indication, if you're ever in a hospital, it's the nursing staff you will find yourself turning to when you are bleeding and in pain and the doctor has no time for you.

I would not date a female sumo wrestler.

No, actually he doesn't interest me, but I thought this would be a good topic for discussion, as it could be a problem for someone. Also, it's very rare I've seen guys on dating sites who are in Nursing. Actually my ex once mentioned Nursing, strictly because of the money, but he ended up doing Criminal Justice.

well I still think it's a silly thing to turn down someone for but that's me.

Well, I never said I would turn someone down indefinite. I would be hesitant to date them possibly(knowing this first thing), but if they were great in other ways, I would probably deal with it. I still may find myself feeling awkward about it, but sometimes can't help how you feel.

nah if i worked as a nurse ud date me...dont lie :p

Thats because those guys are surrounded by women at work, like shootin fish in a barrel. Why go to dating sites when youre surrounded by women?

I still may find myself feeling awkward about it, but sometimes can't help how you feel.

But can you even articulate what makes you feel awkward about a guy being a nurse besides the name - since the profession isnt a womans game anymore?

I don't know, its more like my three female cousins are Nurses. I had an old female friend get into Nursing, and another female friend flunk out of Nursing school. Every time I go to a hospital, I only see female nurses. I'm sorry, it's just a bit hard to grasp.:)

The only guy I knew to get into actual Nursing, was this odd guy that was in my high school chorus, and he is married to another Nurse.:confused:

Well besides the mental images I get?

I don't know, maybe some of the work does seem more along the lines of feminine to me. Also, it's hard for me to imagine a male, in the place of female nurses, I've seen over the years in medical facilities.

If I actually witnessed a male nurse in action, I might feel better about it. I just feel awkwardly thinking about it.

I'm also one to often worry what "others" think. Maybe I personally wouldn't care so much ,but I would care what someone else thought knowing my BF or husband was a Nurse. I'm not saying it's just about what someone else thinks, but that is a factor.

Nursing was traditionally a female career choice whilst men were doctors. Do you have a problem with women being doctors? No? Well why the problem with men as nurses?

Equality means not just women doing the work traditionally seen as man's work but also....

Ps. I know we disagreed in the "other thread" but that is not why I am posting here. As I said, my mother was a nurse so this is something I feel strongly about :)

You've got to decorate the arena before the big show, duh :)

It just seems odd. What about you?

i've slept with at least 3 nurses...

if i could video tape working one day in an emergency room, youd be like wow. thats horrible. how could you do it? which is why i dont....

as for the friends thing, i started dating a girl when i was working at the emergency room and at first she felt awkward. in the two months she was used to it and told me she actually felt weird mainly because her friends would say things like "he's doing nursing....?". which made her feel weird about it, but she got over it.

No I don't see anything wrong with a female being a doctor. That's very common. I go to FEMALE doctors often. I NEVER see a male nurse. That's the problem.
