Because they want to make sure you don't 'hate them' because they wanted to be able to dump you without any uncomfortable consequences, which is a pipe dream.

Some people fear being invisible, especially the ones who don't have much of a social or familial network, so they reach out to someone they believe cares about them. Once you've acknowledge that they still exist, most will wander off after being revalidated.
