norajane Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Check out this link re: the great state of Illinois. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-smoking-bars-25-nov25,0,5531427.story For real? Yes, it's for real. People like drinking and smoking and bars that are near the Indiana border do lose customers to Indiana bars because they can still smoke there. Those small business owners would rather pay the fines and keep their businesses open, and their customers are willing to contribute to the fund. I don't see why the law couldn't have allowed for bars to choose whether they are smoking or non-smoking establishments. Both employees and patrons could then make the choice of where they drink or work. Let the market decide, not the government. If non-smoking bars make more money, then you bet there would be smoking bars that switch over to non-smoking. I don't understand why everyone is so willing to let the government do our thinking for us.
donnamaybe Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 i just do not think the powers that be should be allowed to ban cigarettes outright because of the associated health risks. I totally agree. Just as I also feel that marijuana shouldn't be illegal for the same reasons.
lino Posted December 19, 2009 Posted December 19, 2009 This law took effect in my state almost 2 years ago now and I love it!
dreamergrl Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Good! Wisconsin is joining in July of 2010 which means that all the people in the Twin Ports whining about all the bar/lounge business from the smokers going to Superior will no longer hold water. It is SOOOO nice to be able to go out and shoot some pool, go dancing, do karaoke, etc. with friends WITHOUT that "second hand smoke hangover" headache and brutal cough I used to have until noon the next day. I just happened to come across this when I was looking up smoking threads. From what I understood when I was still in Wisconsin, it was Milwaukee joining in.
