I am giving my girlfriend a promise ring...and i have been reading up on diamonds etc, but can anyone tell me the reason behind significant price difference between these seemingly similar rings?

Does anyone know?

Sorry. I don't know anything about diamonds.

My engagement ring from my ex husband was a pearl because that was my favorite "stone" at the time.

Are you sure she likes diamonds? That is my only piece of advice.

the first one has a lower grade colour and clarity, colour being being J-k, clarity I2-I3.

by the looks of it, the second one would be the better deal, because the grade is slightly better than the last one.

prices vary depending on which site you go to.

the colour grades run up the scale, so for example, a D grade colour is better than an E grade. this means that the further you go up the scale there is more yellow in the colour, a D being completely colourless.

But this is a jeweler standard, anything under J will generally still appear white/clear to the naked eye, especially when teamed with a white metal.

this site tells you about diamond grading..

This is going to be a 'pre' engagement ring of sorts. I dont have alloottt of cash, so would going with the last one be a good option? I guess what im asking, are the differences THAT huge with the naked eye?

No, they wouldnt be, thats why there is only a few 100 dollars between them.

these things only really come into play when you're talking about a larger stone, in a cut which would show any flaws more easily, like, say, an emerald cut.

TBH i dont really get the 'pre-engagement' ring thing.

if you are talking about a commitment ring, personally i wouldnt go for a diamond solitaire, as this is what a traditional engagement ring is.

so when you do get engaged, she gets one just like it only bigger? for me, I think it would be nice to have a commitment ring in another stone, of a different design, so she can wear her commitment ring on her other hand when you do become engaged, and it wont look like she's wearing the same ring on each hand if you get me.

Thanks for all of the help. You do raise a good point...what does everyone else think about this? bad idea?

I agree with what Malenfant said about not getting a diamond solitaire. Especially if that's what you have planned for the engagement ring. I'd go for colored stones. Maybe a ring that has your birthstone and her birthstone on it together. That could be a personal preference, however. She might hate that idea. I like birthstones in general. So if the yours-and-hers isn't gonna fly (maybe the colors clash), you could just get one that has HER birthstone on it.

the nice thing about white gold is any stone will match. the birthstone is a nice idea (if she likes it!)

also, many semi precious stones are very beautiful, you can buy a very high quality semi precious stone ring for relatively little money.

i think blue topaz or amethyst look particuarly nice next to white gold.

:)
