confusedinky Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Have any of you tried to go this route? At this point (and trust me I could be very wrong) I don't foresee our separation being contested too much by either one of us, we have more debt then cash and I'd like to avoid a bunch of legal fees.
Trimmer Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I'm in a no-fault state. I was able to download all the necessary forms from my county superior court website. I consulted with a lawyer initially and let him know what I wanted to do. He pointed me to the court website and gave me some general initial advice. I did all the legwork, filled out all the forms to the best of my ability, then took them back in for him to review. He pointed out any suggested changes, I fixed them, and filed them myself. I did the whole process myself (including appearing before the judge for the final decree to be entered.) But our situation was cooperative, and my spouse "joined" the petition, and we worked things out to the point where we both signed all papers where necessary, so there wasn't anything for the court to decide....
Author confusedinky Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 Thanks, I am still going to talk to a few attorneys.
parmaker14 Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 We live in Utah. My wife and I agreed on all of the terms of the agreement so I was able to complete and print all the forms we needed online. The State then gave me a checklist of what to file and when. The clerk at the Court was very helpful. We filed our final documents on July 28th and the Court signed off on July 30th. Total cost like $320. It's definately the way to go if your divorce is amicable and you can agree on all the terms of the agreement.
