DenverBachelor Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I've seen some books mentioned like, "No more Mr. Nice Guy" and "Why men love bitches." Could anyone recommend other books as well? I am looking for a book that focuses on improving your life, maintaining successful relationships, etc. Any suggestions?

It has all you need to move on with your life, stay busy and meet people. events, clubs, movies, sports, restaurants, personals. this works better than any self help bs book.
Author DenverBachelor Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 You make me laugh Thanks. I've been polishing up my stand-up routine!
angelface78 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Steve Harvey book...THINK LIKE A MAN ACT LIKE A LADY!! Great book...for the ladies though...sorry denverbachelor!!
Art_Critic Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Honestly DB.. you need to deal with your drinking problem first and then figure out why you were addicted to opiates thru your whole relationship. You can read all the relationship books you want and not one of them will help with your addictions. and your addictions and the person you become thru them will ruin any chance of ever being truly happy and in a good place with another. I know your are still reeling from the breakup and you seem to have pushed like we all have and burnt all the bridges but all that heartache and pain isn't all for naught.. learn from it... Now it's time for the real work... you need to work on you.. your next GF will appreciate it.. This is off course only my opinion.. drunk to drunk...

Not only will your next GF appreciate it, so will your body. Of what I've noticed, when in contact with alcoholics, is that their emotions swing high and low, at a staggering pace. This is impossible for any healthy person to handle, since one second you're (the partner, not the alcoholic) an angel, the next, worse than something the doggy puked up. Get some help from AA or whatever makes sense to you, if you can't do it yourself, DB. Seriously.

I am looking for a book that focuses on improving your life, maintaining successful relationships, etc. Any suggestions? My Favorite: "How Proust Can Change Your Life" by Alan De Bottom I cant say it is really a self help but I cant say its not. Good read and thought provoking none the less. Other more traditional: Harritt Lerner "Dance of Intimacy" and "Dance of Connection" While written for women insight offered is pretty universal. Susan Anderson "The Journey from Abandonment to Healing" More for getting through a break up but still worthy read with some good exercises. Charlotte Kriasl "Women, Sex, and Addiction: A Search for Love and Power" Focus on sex addiction but helpful in understand co-dependency behaviors and additional as a whole. Also good at illustration how sex effects many levels of the relationship.
JamesM Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I have found that no books work unless you personally pick them up. To explain...my "method" has always been to go to the local bookstore and browse the self help section. Every time I have done this, I find a book that seems applicable. This usually gives me a boost in my life, and I am on my way again. Perhaps a book on addictions may help. Perhaps a book about anger may help you. Who knows. For me, browsing the many topics has helped me find the appropriate book for the moment. I have never had a book "work" that was recommended for me. But that may be just me.
LucreziaBorgia Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I read The Art of Power by Thich Nhat Hanh after my last disaster of a "relationship". It actually did help quite a bit to draw my mind from the negatives and work toward some positives. It certainly did help me to walk away from such a horrible situation and not look back!
USMCHokie Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I'm Having More Fun Than You. Well, just kidding...but not really...it was the first book I read after the breakup...I think it may have motivated me for about 2 days...then I became a bigger mess...
johan Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 There's this little book called, oh let's see... The Bible. Ever heard of that? It's only the world's all time best-seller. I'd also recommend The Mack Within - The Holy Book of Game by Tariq "King Flex" Nasheed. Either one of those would be fine.
