ladyblondie Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I been struggling with acne since puberty at the age of 13. Im now 28. I don't have health insurance to go to a dermatologist. I keep very clean, good hegiene. Don't wear alot of face makeup, so I don't know what to do to stop acne from keep occuring. What works?
D-Lish Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Try pro-active, everyone I know that has had a problem with acne has had success with it. It's not overly expensive.
fral945 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 If you want to go the non-medicinal route I would recommend you try dietary modifications, such as adding more omega 3s into your diet (from foods like salmon, walnuts, flaxseed oil, etc) and avoiding fried foods. My current GF is like you and hers has improved dramatically since she began doing these things, especially cutting out fried foods and adding the flaxseed oil. I don't know what your dietary habits are, but work on improving your diet and eating healthier and see if you see any improvement.
Boundary Problem Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Don't touch your face with anything. Everything has germs on it (e.g. resting chin on your palm, a scarf). Wash your face at lunch time and spend some time outdoors. Those are my beauty secrets. Oh and good diet. One of the reasons I don't eat too much chocolate. Vegetables for some reason make my skin glow and tighten up. So try lots of home-made veggie stew. And forget about it. Worrying about it will make it worse. Acne is no big deal. Don't let it hold you back in your social life.
Author ladyblondie Posted December 2, 2009 Author Posted December 2, 2009 I tried Proactive acouple years ago. Maybe I should go back to it. One thing that was mentioned is diet. I do need to change up my diet and not eat so much fast food. Thanks everyone.
jw90063 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I been struggling with acne since puberty at the age of 13. Im now 28. I don't have health insurance to go to a dermatologist. I keep very clean, good hegiene. Don't wear alot of face makeup, so I don't know what to do to stop acne from keep occuring. What works? What type of cleansers and moisturizers do you currently use? Also, do you use foundation? I have always had issues with breaking out, but I'm in pretty good control now or at least compared to in the past. I have to be careful what I use. I did use Proactiv for years, and it worked for the most part. Suddenly my skin was clearly being over exfoliated(due to their cleanser)and things took a turn for the worst. It got extremely oily. If I dry out my skin, I will get bad acne. Drying it out will only make it produce more oil, which causes acne. If I keep it balanced it does ok. I also don't wear foundation, just spot cover.
Boundary Problem Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I don't wear much makeup either. It just causes skin problems. I use hypo-allergenic face lotion (Oil of Olay). It is expensive, but if you aren't spending much on make-up it actually is cheap. I use cheap soap - no name brand probably 3 times a day. No fried foods, unless it is just a little sample off someone else's plate. Exercise. We all get outbreaks - always when it is most inconvenient, and at certain times of the month. It feels sometimes like it is the end of the world, but it is only a big deal if you make it a big deal.
Awesome Username Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 It depends on the severity of the acne. If you have mild to moderate acne, Proactive will work for you. If you have moderate to severe acne, improve your diet, ALWAYS drink a lot of water, use Proactiv or Obagi (it's better than Proactiv, but a little more pricey) and make sure your pillow cases are clean. In the case of severe acne, you will likely have scarring and the cause is most likely either a base reaction to strong antibiotics or a genetic problem (like oil glands that are bigger than your pores, etc.). You doctor might prescribe Accutaine and you will need to drink lots of water. Again, it all depends on the person and there isn't really one cure-all method.
CLC2008 Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Acne is like a food allergy, it is very difficult to pinpoint what triggers it and what methods are successful in treating it. I don't suffer from acne, but Rosacea runs in my family and I've had a few outbreaks, including Perioral dermatitis. The only thing that worked for me in those cases were antibiotics (change of diet, creams, did not work for me). Simple methods you could try are soap-free products for your face (i.e. Dove's hypo-allergenic fragrance free soap), same thing for make-up and you should always wear sunscreen when outdoors.
TheLoneSock Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I used to have a little bit of acne from about age 16-18, during that time I found that my skin reacted well to a certain kind of face wash, and it cleared up quickly and has not come back since - I still use the same face wash to this day. It's not proactive or anything specialy designed, but it couldn't hurt to try it out. It's fairly cheap too, around $5 per container. http://www.noxzema.com/products/noxzema-deep-cleansing-cream-pump.aspx I'm not sure what all you've tried, but if you haven't you might as well give that a shot. Like I said it's cheap and it worked great for me.
jw90063 Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 It's interesting. When I posted on here the other day, I was thinking "I'm glad my acne is under control" at the moment. Sure enough, within a few days, I had a sudden change. If it gets extra cold, my skin dries out...I break out worse. Also, being around indoor heating effects my skin as well. Let's just say now I look like a pizza within a matter of days. If your skin is worse in the winter time, it definitely has something to do with it being cold and it drying out. I try to use moisturizers, but still doesn't seem to cut it. I believe I have rosacea. So, I was looking forward to the cold weather, now I'm not so much.
Sweetcheripie Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Both my kids have been to the Dermatologist for their acne. My daughter's cleared up with Yaz. Her skin is peaches and cream now and it was quite bad. She is 16. The derm suggested only using Cetaphil soap in the morning and at night. Only using mineral make up and being very gentle to your skin. No scrubbing, picking or popping. Pro Active did not work for either of my kids. They did give a suggestion of not taking Multi vitamins with Niacin. That actually turned out to be a trigger for my son. He went the Accutane route. It worked quickly and amazing. He stopped taking it after about 6 months because he started having some personality changes and it scared me. His skin has a few blemishes here and there but still mostly clear. He also hated the side effect of really super dry skin. The derm said good diet, lots of rest, and drinking lots of water helps but sometimes you must go the prescription route. My son tried the Retin-A routine but his skin got bad really fast and he wanted it better really fast. So thats why we went Accutane. You have to take a monthly blood test while on it but the actual drug is generic now so it wasn't that expensive.
luvflower Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Pro-activ works! Trust me... I don't wear much make-up if any. So my breakouts would come from stress or something I ate. So please try pro-activ and keep your hair out of your face and watch what you eat in case you're allergic to something dairy... * Pro-activ may seem drying at first,so make sure you use sunscreen in the day and sleep with a little vaseline around the dry areas AT NIGHT...You will be happy you tried it.

luvflower Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 If you can't get pro-activ or anything else that was named in here, also try CETAPHIL face wash. It's very mild face wash in case you haven't heard of it and is good for the winter especially.
