What experiences do you guys have in toning and getting the lower stomach to pop? In general, what works in getting your body to look even somewhat sexy?

Getting the upper abs toned is simple but any kind of work out techniques would be appreciated.

I P90X, and make sure to do the ab ripper at the end of every video.

Also, don't eat junk like fake sugar. Eat lots of fruits and veggies and bran and whole wheat, etc.

I don't have super ripped abs, because I don't want them to be - I just have the three tummy lines and a pretty flat stomach.

My bf does this workout and has ripped abs.

getting ripped in the ab area means you have gotten yourself below 10% overall body fat. The guys in ads like BowFlex are down in the 4-6% range which allows for those really tight distinct cuts. Essentially, if you want to get ripped in that area, it involves alot of cardio and lifting, plus a very strict and disciplined diet that you monitor, adjust, and do not slip up - ever. In those areas of low body fat, it can be very difficult to maintain from month to month, because you need to monitor you workout routines to make sure you are not slipping into a catabolic state and not cannibalizing your muscle mass. Essentially, once I got to 10% body fat, it was a break down of 70% diet, and 30% exercise to get lower then 10%. It's very hard to do, if you are not genetically inclined for it, but it is a great goal to try to achieve. Most guys who run in that 10% or less range keep very concise daily journals of every calorie and the amount of physical workout they do. It can become all consuming, when you are pushing for those levels. Good luck :)

It also depend on your age, how hard this will be for you.

Very true, its deceiving in a lot of ways becasue these men and women in fitness mags usually do some pretty severe prep and dieting before a photo shoot. Its very difficult to maintain that physic without devoting a ton of time to it. My goal is to try and get to 10 - 12% body fat by next summer at least for a week!;) At 40 yrs old it should be challenging!

If getting the upper part is simple for you, then it's a just a step to get the lower sharp.

As mentioned by others, diet is key when it gets to that point for 90% of everyone.

abs are not built with exercise but in the "kitchen"

I had a 6 pack for year without ever doing a crutch. Of course, I was bodybuilding and my diet was super clean

So clean diet, some cardio and weight lifting was my secret. There is no way around it, or any magic pill to being in great shape.

You kind of contradicted yourself here, but I understand what you mean. Diet is crucial to low body fat, but without a decent amount of exercise, you will not (unless genetically predisposed to low body fat in that region) ever uncover them. I am also sometimes amazed that people still believe the old myth that you can spot reduce fat by just working a particular region of the body.

Usually (for guys) getting a six pack is the hardest thing they will do, because we natually carry our body fat around the mid section, where women carry it around the hips and thighs.

to work the lower stomach, when you do crunches, raise your legs at the same time, knees slightly bent. push your belly button down and pull in with your abs and pull up with your lower stomach.

another one is lie on your back with your legs upright and your back flat, push your legs up towards the ceiling just using the lower stomach muscles, soles of your feet horizontal. the movement is quite small, just a couple of inches if that.

do about 40 reps of each excercise, and also do the plank to tone out the whole stomach.

Toning is an urban myth that has been created by the late night infomercial.

There is one exercise that will definitely work on making your abs show, it's called the table pushoff! (stolen from another poster).

Unless your stomach is lean, your abs won't pop no matter what you do.

If you want your abs to pop, there is only one thing you can do - stop working on your abs. And no, I am not joking.

There is a silly-silly belief for some reason that 95% of the people follow. No matter how much you work on your abs, they will not pop, and just for emphasis I will repeat: they will NOT pop, unless the rest of the body is in sync.

Simply put: you must train all of your body, from legs to thighs to stomach to neck to back and shoulders biceps etcetera. I don't remember the exact values, but I read in a medical report that it is required for males to have less than 8% body fat and for females to have less than 12% body fat to show abs. The only way to reduce body fat is to train your entire body, not just your abs.

Good luck,

Dan.

Doing crunchs and leg raises are important for building a strong core but its not going to get you ripped abs.

You'll never have abs llike the people in magazines consistantly because most of them have diets and work outs that let them peak and have lower percent body fat then they normaly do at other times.

Low body fat is the only way to make your body look toned and there are weight training diets you can look up on the internet. The reason you have to weight train is because once you build big leg, chest, back, and arm muscles they all work to burn lots of calories and make it posible to have that lean muscular look.

Cardio, lots and lots of it. Once you're at a low body body fat percentage, your abs will really show, especially after you have toned it with crunches and situps. I do alot of crunches, but I refrain from overtraining my abs because that's more harm than good.

I incorporate crunches with weights and medicine balls. I also love oblique workouts. I always love working out to Tae-bo.
