Not weird at all IME. I'm afraid I've been that sweet guy to several partners of close friends over the years. And it can be very hard on you, especially when you are seeing them in the full knowledge that their partner is not being faithful/treating them as they deserve etc, whilst you can't say a thing because they are pining or in total denial about it and quite unwilling to get out of that relationship and into one with someone well-able and willing to love and care. Eventually I've usually had to say "fu*k-it" and walk away as it became just too hard to see people you care for tear each other to bits.
