kevinconner Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I'm not sure who told me this, but I think there was a European country that is now moving forward with the idea of making marriage a non-renewable 7yr contract. You have to re-sign for marriage each 7 year period. Imagine what this would do for many of us. Any thoughts out there on if this is a good or bad idea?
Lizzie60 Posted November 6, 2009 Posted November 6, 2009 I would make it 5 years... I think it's a good idea.. especially if the partners specify what they expect from the other.. then they would be bound to respect their 'contract'..

This is some of the STUPIDEST crap I have heard. Just what we need, more government interference. If you don't want to make more than a 7 year commitment, just say NO. Don't get married, shack up until you are sick of the SO, then go your merry way. I can see it now, you have to pay the gov. for your marriage license, then if you actually love the person and want to stay with them, you have to fill out forms with all your personal info and pay more money to stay married. Stupid plan, which means we will probably be voting on it in the near future....

And I'm fairly certain no nation has tried this. How would you have a family? And if you had joint property together, you would have to go through a divorce like preceding anyways. Why would you even bother getting married?

You have to re-sign for marriage each 7 year period. I think your friend was jumping the gun a little. A somewhat controversial German politician called Gabriele Pauli suggested that marriage contracts should be automatically terminated after 7 years, with the option of extending the marriage after that period by mutual agreement. I'm not quite sure what her logic is, why she doesn't think current divorce legislation provides sufficient means for couples to break up if they wish - or how she imagines such state interference in people's marriages would be compatible with the Convention Right to family life. There's a bit of a difference between a maverick politician expressing a controversial opinion (possibly just to draw attention to themselves) and an entire government incorporating that opinion into the law. I really don't think this is something Germany is seriously considering.
