My guess is you just have a DARE perspective on drug usage, and are being intentionally insensitive and unhelpful. Just a thought. I have a hard time believing that her BF wasn't ino coke at the time they met. And I don't even know what DARE stands for, but my perspective on drug users is pretty simple: they are one category of people that I don't consider dateable, along with convicted felons, religious nuts, jerry springer viewers and terrorists.
