Was reading some other posts, and I got the idea to start a thread on this topic. As you know, a lot of men do not like cats, or hate them. There are some who don't mind them or actually really like them.

From experience, it seems the guys who do not like cats are the very aggressive nature type men, or even ones who tend to be abusive.

Ladies, what are your experiences with cats and men? :) Further more, what do men on here actually think of cats? Do you care if your partner has one? Do you think something is wrong with a man if he doesn't like cats? Is that a red flag to you?

I've always had guys say they are allergic to cats as a reason to dodge them, but I think it may be just be an excuse. Also, one guy said he hated cats because most of them are mean. I find this totally untrue, although there are mean cats out there in the world.

I wouldn't draw such an extreme conclusion from people who don't like cats or pets. Not everyone does.

But it is a big, red flag, if you have or want pets. It's more a matter of compatibility and priority.

I hate cats.

I think they're a dreadful waste of good fur.....

No, seriously though, because cats aren't my priority, I'm not to worried.

And I love dogs, but my lifestyle means I simply could not have one, it would be unfair on the dog...

What you have to be careful of is people who are abusive towards animals - these people are statistically far more liable to be abusive towards people and children.....

I love cats, always have, but never had them until a month ago, and I absolutely love them. I'm the kind of guy who wouoldn't hurt a fly and only gets a date every leap year. I'm allergic to cats as well. But I still have them.

Whether they are or aren't abusive towards people/children, anyone who would abuse a helpless animal who's dependent on them, should be shot!

I don't like cats. My ex had a cat when I first met her and I lived with it for 10 years. During that time she (the cat) clawed up my vintage furniture (until she was declawed) hid under beds, refusing to leave our bedroom at night so she could crawl into our bed as we slept, hissed at our infant kids, urinated on my family heirloom 100 year old Persian rug...shall I continue?

My belief is that feline is not to be domesticated. It is too wild, unpredictable and difficult to train. Cats have a very low IQ compared to dogs and mostly behave on instinct. Having said that, I don't hate cats but I do dislike people who can't control their pets and refuse to set boundaries. I don't like the idea of a litter box or any fecal matter remaining in the house.

I don't think my dislike of cats has anything to do with my nature towards women. I'm a very sensitive caring guy, definitely not the abusive type. I owned and loved many pets.

I agree. People will have their likes/dislikes. Doesn't make them a bad person. However, I have a friend whose husband will automatically shoot any kitty that wanders onto their property. :sick:IMO, that makes him a big, gaping a-hole.

I could tell you stories that would dispell that myth in a heartbeat.

I don't think it makes them a bad person just because they don't like an animal, but It is bad if someone is abusive towards any animal. There is a reason I am specifically talking about cats. Have you ever seen a picture of a cat? They are very cute, unless you are blind. Also, they are very affectionate and cuddly. Birds are not exactly like this and many other animals. My point is, I don't see how someone totally dislikes ALL cats, unless you are not soft hearted. My mom always told me, anyone who doesn't like a cat is weird, and honestly from experience, I've found this to be true. No offense to those who don't like them.

To the comment about dogs IQ being higher, I find this questionable, since they eat most anything in sight, including fecal matter. :)

I'm a girl, and I don't like cats...does that make me a bad person? Should others take that as a red flag?

That said, I do have a cat (inherited her from my brother), and I love her to pieces.

My bf also has a cat. I think he's much more a cat person than a dog person. He's really into his cat. And liking cats does not at all make him a more dateable or better person than someone who doesn't like cats.

Good point! :lmao:

I'm a cat lover (there's a surprise ;)) but I would not think someone who disliked cats was automatically weird - unless possibly if their opinion was extreme dislike/hatred which would seem over the top.

You also need to consider that differing cultures have differing views on pets with some just not understanding why anybody would want to keep an animal in the house like that. They might then think that someone who loves cats is weird :). It takes all sorts.

actually i think if a guy is all about cats... That IS wierd!

I don't know about cats in particular, but I wouldn't be compatible with any man who dislikes animals. I don't have any particular fondness for cats, but I have one. I also have a dog and would probably prefer to own two or three.

Plus I read an article one time that indicated a man who was patient and loving with dogs/cats/other animals would also be more likely to be patient and loving with his gf, kids and people in general. It just shows a compassionate side that I prefer to have in men I date.

I actually am allergic to cats, short and long haired. Even if I wasn't allergic to them I still would hate them. Cats just seem so useless. I love dogs!

I don't hate cats.

I'm just not a fan of them.

I wouldn't hurt one.

I have dog. Sometimes i'm not a fan of her either, but the kids love her.

Now, women that are on their way to being that crazy cat lady on the corner are more of an issue for me.

I'm very aggressive and I like cats. I like dogs too.

What does that imply about me?

I'm not basing this on stories but scientific evidence.

It has been said that in human developmental terms an adult dog is roughly equivalent to a two-year-old which means it knows almost 300 words or signals. The average cat is more akin to an 18-month-old which means it knows about 50 words. Obviously, the more words a creature knows, the better it's able to communicate and the more it is apt to succeed in a social environment. Studies have also shown that because dogs social in packs when in the wild, they are forced to become more adept and reading verbal and non-verbal cues for survival. Notably, dogs joined human families about 14,000 years ago, while cats were first domesticated 4,500 years ago. I do not take credit for all of the information cited.

Sorry, Stace, but I've never known a dog who did NOT eat the poop or puke of whatever animal happened to discharge it, or roll in whatever dead animal had been decaying for days in the middle of the road, and I have NEVER seen a cat do any of those things. And I have owned MANY kitties in my lifetime.

I base it on living with various and sundry kitties year after year after year and making personal observations. I don't have to read about it. I've lived it.

I used to work in veterinary hospitals and at a vet school, so it does occur in other species besides canines. Most often it was because the dog was malnourished from abuse or neglect, or because it had a parasite that was depriving it.

I like both dogs and cats, for very different reasons honestly. I think each species has its benefits and drawbacks as pets. :)

Four of my sisters have ALWAYS owned a dog, as has my mother. They ALWAYS take the best care of their animals, with regular checkups at the vet and never neglecting them. Hell, they even buy the vet-recommended food that costs a fortune. So no - in the cases I have personally known, which are numerous, the dogs aren't eating other animals' excrement and puke because of malnourishment, neglect, or abuse, nor any kind of parasite. I know this as fact. My mother co-founded our local Humane Society. My family doesn't neglect their animals. Ever.

Have you also lived with lots of doggies? Because I have lived with both, actually several at a time, but again I place greater weight in scientific evidence except when it comes to matters of religion
