I am the chair person for the fun committee, in charge of planning quarterly events. I have a rotating team of about four other committee members. For the past year I have had one person that has consistently been on the team. His ideas are very useful; however he can be a bit overbearing. Sometimes scheduling meeting on my behalf (but with our my consent), and being very vocal about the way events should go. As you can imagine it's hard to always get everyone to agree.

On Friday we had our Q4 event. Months ago we started planning. We all met and discussed various suggestions. Then each person took one suggestion to research, cost and logistic's. We then met again and discussed each event, at the end of the meeting we each gave our top three suggestions (all picking the same top three).

After that I put an e-mail together and e-mail the suggestions (3) to our CEO and COO. I stated pro's and con's of each event and asked if we could poll staff on their top choice, explaining that I didn't want to decide for everyone (we have 160 staff members). They both replied choosing one event and the day and time of the event.

I then worked with the facility, caterer's, and such to organize the event. I invited my husband to the event and got stuck having to deal with several issues, I didn't even get to enjoy myself very much and my husband, unfortunately, got stuck by himself for a while.

Today my boss told me that someone told HR that I didn't let the other fun committee members pick what event we did, that I chose the event. This is of course not true. I told my boss that I even have documentation showing that our CEO and COO picked the event. I also told her that I have notes where the entire fun committee voted in the event, which can be confirmed by the other committee members.

Today one of the members sends me an e-mail, copies everyone else on the fun committee and HR, and says that due to various reasons he is resigning from the committee. So I am pretty sure he is the one who complained to HR.

I am pissed! I have planned four events, and never get to actually go to an event and relax and enjoy myself...it's even more of a slap in the face to then have someone complain to HR and then to have them bring it up in a management meeting with our CEO, COO, and all company VP's present. I am upset that the VP of HR would even relay this information without confirming if it was true.

My boss asked me to print out all e-mails I had on this event, so I gave them to her, and she is going to share them with the COO and CEO.

I think it's time I passed the torch, what's the point fo chairing the committee when I can't have fun and then have false rumors being passed to management which makes me look bad!

ugh... i feel for you fathom!!

i am on a few committees at work, and yes- it can be a pain in the neck.

we all know you cannot please everyone, but why is it that certain employees that always get pissy (no matter what you do) are the vocal ones? and the ones that higher ups actually seem to respond to?

and they usually are the ones that would rather have the least popular choice available.

if you are going to also resign, i would write a letter to the CEO COO and HR listing the reasons, specifically that one member, but not by name.

I wish I could mention this instance, but I was told by my boss not to mention it to anyone. She told me in confidence so I could have a chance to defend myself...

Arrggg, I tryed so hard to please everyone. This guy is the most vocal and our higher-up's actually get annoyed by him because he complains so much. He tried to use me and other people (by befriending us) to get around things. Pretending to be our friends so we could help with get special supplies and software. Which we always refused to do...

ah, yes one of Those employees..... i never understand what value most of them bring to a company....

well write a nice letter saying you have enjoyed your time as chairperson blah, blah.... you wish you had more time to enjoy the events, but when there you have to make sure things run smoothly- therefore you miss some of the relaxed enjoyment.... that you have learned alot and want someone else to have the experience....

step down from the committee, explaining that you've enjoyed helping with the committee, but it's time to allow someone else the opportunity to help plan fun events for YOU to enjoy. Keep it short and to the point, and don't mention the jackass who has poisoned the well.

besides, after helping coordinate four events in a year, it's time for you to enjoy the fruits of someone else's labor

I agree with the suggestion to resign with dignity and graciousness. It will be much more fun to watch the fell'r squirm that you came off with clean hands and a smile on your face.

I don't even know you yet I can tell you took pride in what you did. Hats off for chairing the event!

you may have learned what is so often said- please those that matter and leave those that don't matter to please themselves :)

Excellent. I love this. You guys are on fire with all of this advice you've given to her.

Redfathom, it's time for you to enjoy these events ... on the other side. ;)
