I cannot tell you how often I have met someone who mentions a "fiance" who they've been "engaged" to for five, six, even seven years! I'm sorry, but I thought the word "fiance" was reserved for those who planned to marry in the near future, not in some hypothetical future that never seems to arrive.

At what point does referring to someone as "my fiance" become a joke rather than a description?

I'm not sure, but once you get over two or three years I think the "engaged" pair are increasingly kidding themselves. My wife and I set a date within a month or two of the engagement.

I think fiance has become a total joke.

I was engaged for two years, then another two years to someone else, then married, then married again, and neither of my marriages included an 'engagement' period. You either do, or don't, imho. But if I did find myself in another engagement period, I would top out at three months. Plenty of time for venue, caterer, etc.

when they have been engaged longer than two years

I agree that a wedding should be in mind when getting engaged. I think after 2 years it gets to the point where it's a little rediculous. I realize some people want to save money for a wedding but getting engaged with no end in sight IMO just becomes a title.

Apparently fertility has much to do with the length of the engagement...

I spit up my decaf on that one. Thanks for the laugh!!! :lmao:

I cannot comment. My husband was the one. We dated a bit shy of 2 years but from when he asked me to marry him it was 20 days (yes, days) til the wedding (potluck, in my mother's backyard). So, needless to say, 2,3,4,5,6... YEARS is beyond my reckoning.

Kid number one was a year and a half after the wedding though. :bunny:
