"Soon." Does it mean more than we think? My friends and I were having a discussion about people in the dating world being vague with their intentions. What's your opinion on when someone says "I'll (X,Y,Z- i.e. email, call, see, text) you soon"? Do you find that it's the kiss of death? As in last thing they say before they split? As in Adios, nice to know you, goodbye...What's your take? Is this true or false?

If he's interested, it means "I'll (x,y,z) you soon."

If he's not interested, it means, "Don't hold your breath."

I'll see you,

(1) SOON = THey want to see you again..

(2) AROUND= They won't go outta their way to see you soon, but if they bump into you at a party or walmart.. they may say "hey"

If he says soon, don't be concerned.. I don't think it is the kiss of death..

If youre not sure if hes into you, never hold your breath, dont count on anything until youre sure of everything. Theres no need to sweat what you cant control. if he calls, he does. if he doesnt, his loss. Dont wonder. Its about you, not him.

If you like going though the emotional roller coaster of wondering, well thats on you.

If a guy tells me he'll call soon I take his word for it. He'll call soon.

it means he wants to make a function of three variables with you. no i'm serious. He wants to do some calculus with you. Ah crap, another pun. He wants to be tangent to your curves? ah crap. Um, he wants to explore rate of change of motion with you? not another one. He wants to integrate your function?

// actually I don't know. You might want to ask him lol

No, I'm not asking this question for me! I'm asking about this situation in general. I was just wondering what other people thought- if they thought of anything when they heard this.

it depends on what happened before the "X, Y, Z" part

Like everything else, this is reliant on context and no combination of words, assures 100% that someone means what they are saying.

Taken by itself, "see you soon" means just that. "See you" or "see you around" tends to be more noncommittal.

I'd take it as what it is, non-committal and ambiguous. Which means that's a reflection of his view of our interaction, which means I'd continue dating around. If he calls he calls, if not, that's life.

When a guy's really into you, he'll find a way to lock down your time, whether he asks you for another date the same night, or he contacts within the next day.

Yes! Non-committal. Thanks TBF! I totally agree with this. BUT I'll also say that this is implied, if there's a "soon" tacked on to the end of it. To me "I'll call/email you" is different from "I'll call/email you soon"...sounds waaay too non-committal.

when i tell a girl "i'll call you soon" it usually means "don't expect a call anytime soon"

if i really am going to call i'll say something like "i'll call you middle part of next week" or "i'll call you wed nite"

Oh so that's why you never called.

Dang. :(

I thought the OP meant "SEE you soon," not "call you soon." Anyway, ambiguous, yeah, it could be. Some people are more into setting dates in advance, than others, though.

I think analyzing everyday word patterns and looking for red flags is silly unless you know the tone with which the person was speaking.

Isolde, unless a guy locks down a definitive day, it's all meaningless. Also, a guy who doesn't give much advance notice, has no respect for your time.

what's your definition of "advance notice"? three days?

Three days is fair notice.
