This is sort of related to Ilovecake's thread about men preferring "bimbos." However, I don't wish to imply that men are only interested in "bimbos," but I do find that the more intellectual a woman is, the less attracted most men are.

It's not just the men who I am friends with, but most men I talk to in general. Yes: most men ultimately prefer a woman whom they can have a conversation with, even if they may be more physically attracted to the "bimbo" type. However, I find that men still want to have an intellectual "one-up," so to speak, on the woman they're dating.

In other words, it seems to me that men prefer a woman whose intellect is not on par with or above theirs, but is sufficient enough to understand whatever topic they are talking about and be able to converse about said topic to some degree.

I find that most men are not interested in women who may be more intellectual than they are or at least have the capacity to become more intellectual--it's as though there is a limit to the degree of intellect a woman can possess and still be considered romantically attractive.

Men, my questions for you are: (1) what are your thoughts on intellectual women, (2) is there a limit to how intellectual a woman can be and still be considered romantically attractive, and, finally, (3) what is your current age and social position?

I ask the latter, because I find that older men are more open to being with intellectual women than younger men are; but, I'm also in college, so maybe my demographic is altering the outcome.

I have yet to meet a woman superior to me intellectualy. :D

This is probably because I tend to date girls 1-2 years younger than me. But if you mean in a certain subject or topic, YES it's attractive that they have a passion like that. But if you mean over all? Life experience? General wisdom? Intellectual IQ? Can't say I've dated a girl that is higher than me in those regards- nor would I be able to spot a girl right off the bat that would have those qualities. (And hence not know what to look for, and as such pursue.)

1) Most of the women I met in my profession are too much like guys. Smart girls aren't a turn off.

2) No

3) 25, lawyer

Ha. Ha. Ha. :mad::p

And how old are you/what is your social position? I'm going to guess late teens/early twenties?

I guess I should have answered in the suggested way lol.

1) It can be sexy, as long as they aren't a nerdy prude.

2) No

3) 24, born middle class, am comfortable staying middle class (I like the small town life)

So, are you equating being an intellectual and successful woman to being like a guy--thus, a turn off? Or are you implying that being masculine is coincidental to the particular women you work with?

See, that's another problem: most men I know equate being intellectual with not being feminine. I suppose they want a woman who can think, but not so much that it undermines the man's role as the intellectual-heavy.

The top three pick up lines from men, to women:

  1. Baby I'm gonna' flood your brain with neurotoxins.
  2. Wow, your corpus callosum can sit on my lateral ventricles, any day!
  3. I'm sitting here in mortal agony, wondering how your cerebral cortex functions. Put me out of my misery and let me experience this with you, my love.

I equate most female lawyers with being like men.

Yeah, if they take on man qualities. Think the tomboy that can't figure out why her guy friends don't see her as a potential date.

What if you knew she was more intellectual, but acted dumb/let you feel smarter?

I know women who do this--infuriating.

LOL, just to clarify: I am not interested in my guy friends (too young for me--I date OLDER men), and I am certainly not a "Tom Boy." I am, however, a misandrist to some degree, because most (particularly, young) men I know just don't like smart women regardless of looks. Period.

I find this information to be disheartening to say the least.

Yes.. I agree with this:

I ask the latter, because I find that older men are more open to being with intellectual women than younger men are;

Older men have more life experience.. therefore are more confident..

but there are exceptions..

I find that younger men are (and again.. some exceptions).. more threatened by an intelligent woman.. probably from their lack of confidence or simply lack of baggage.

Some guys will say that a really smart woman is a frigid feminist or simply a bitch... I've heard that many times.. they are insecure azzes.. and most likely far less intelligent than the woman they're calling a bitch. :o

It's not about confidence. It's about what they value or are looking for in a girl at that time in their life. Looks > intelligence when you're young (although that's not age specific). If they are smart too that's just a bonus.

The hot, less intelligent woman beats the less attractive, smart woman every day of the week. It's all about biological superiority.

You sound like you've been spurned in the past.

But you know what I'm trying to say in a teasing way. Women will select men for their intelligence where men will select women irrespective of her intelligence (just enough to get his jokes, that is). :p

I'm a woman, but in my experience : I'm college educated, professional, and prefer "mens men".

So, I was an English major who owns a theatre co. and writes plays, YOU are a carpenter who loves politics and can fix damn near anything. I say thats a good match !

There are SO many forms of "intelligence", that I have never found this a problem as long as I didn't ( and I certainly did not) feel in any way superior to a guy because he and I have different fields of expertise.

I Like competence. In whatever form it reveals itself.

I have not found being a "brainy chick" a problem with guys, in fact they usually find it refreshing to NOT deal with a bimbo, and you get a lot more respect.

But the other sides of my personality also prob round it out, in that i''m a beer drinking, cigarette smoking little blonde who likes to fish and ride motorcycles as much as I like to get down with the classics.:D

Nothing I HATE more than sitting down with a supposed intellectual who is so tight a**ed, that he lives in fear that somone might use a word he is not familiar with, who " likes" the books and movies that other intellectuals supposedly like, and who makes it feel like we are both quizing each other.

Talk about reeking of insecurity !

I have had wonderful conversations and learned many things from charter captains and neurosurgeons. Truck drivers and rocket scientists.

As long as YOU aren't hung up on that crap, and THEY aren't, Who really gives a tinkers damn ?!?

That was a very funny selection of professions. I almost feel bad for the truck driver lol :p

Personally, I don't care if a guy is more or less intellectual than I am. Of course, I don't want a man who is completely clueless; but, conversely, I certainly don't want to have a conversation with someone who I feel is just trying to dupe me into believing that he is intellectual when he is just an insecure, pretentious jerk.

I will say, though, that I tend to be attracted to guys who are more intellectual than I am. So, I suppose the issue I've outlined won't be a problem for me. However, I do find it annoying that so many men are afraid of intellectual women, or--if not afraid--turned off by them.

This is why I was directing my thread toward men--women usually don't care one way or another. Or, if anything, intellect is viewed as attractive and desirable.

Is that what they want?! If only I had known this sooner......hmmm...maybe I should practice:

*grabs your arm and :lmao::lmao::lmao:* "Oh, Trialbyfire, you're sooooo funny! HA-HA-HA!"

LOL, I know you're not a guy, but: anything? :p

Part of my comments are tongue in cheek, in a gross generalization way.

What you'll find is that the men who aren't turned off by intelligence are the ones who will pursue you. And the ones who aren't turned off by intelligence, are pretty wicked smaht themselves!

I've dated women whom were PhD students, lawyers, doctors and mathematicians - and was in a long-term relationship with a woman from the above category. I'm comfortable with intellectual and capable women.

There's no limit to how intellectual a woman can be.

Age: Gen-X

Social Position: social butterfly

1) I have no problems with intellectual women

2) If there is, I haven't met one

3) 28 - IT Management

I think that some genuinely unattractive (physically / personally) women use the "he won't date me because i'm intellectually intimidating" line as a bitter defense mechanism to explain their sorry personal lives.
