Hi Everyone,

I would like some input. I don't know much about diamonds. The only factors I am working with is that I know my GF likes two settings from different companies and the brand of the company is more important to her than size, clarity, etc. (it's her thing, I do not judge cause I love her!)

Since she likes both settings, the difference comes down to size vs. clarity. The VCA diamond seems almost perfect, although I think it's pretty small (she assures me that she likes smaller diamonds because she thinks big ones look kind of tacky for her - she really likes the butterfly setting). Whereas the HW diamond seems like a good size, but does the size make the VS2 imperfections that more obvious? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

clarity over size for sure! it may be big, but if it is big and looks tinged yellow, it won't be what she is wanting. I think it is usual for guys to think women want the 'bigger the better' diamond, and while this is true :p what we really want is the bigger, clearer, more flawless one.

Congratulations and Good Luck!

You won't be able to see those kind of imperfections with the naked eye- they are only visible under magnification.

Also- a D colour is the whitest colour of diamond you can get, so there won't be any yellow at all.

So while you are paying more for a smaller, higher quality diamond, to the naked eye it won't be obvious.

I'd go for the .5 carat myself at those ratings, however am not so fussed on the HW settings personally.

Congratulations and good luck!

D color? You won't see any yellow there. VS2 won't show to the naked eye, especially when a master jeweler puts the diamond into the setting; they hide the inclusions under prongs whenver possible.

Go for the Harry Winston. Both diamonds are high quality and the inclusions aren't going to be noticeable, so go for the larger carat.

The diamonds aren't going to look as big as they do in the pictures, you do realize that, I hope?

The HW has an H on one side of the ring, and a W on the other. Does she really want a brand literally on her finger? Unless those are her future initials, I'm not so sure that's a good idea....

So I'd go with the other one, even though it's smaller.

A bit of flourescence can allow a more 'yellow' gem (say into the J-K range) to face up white and save on cost.

Personally, I focus in on cut/symmetry (proportions and consistency) primarily and clarity secondarily, with color and polish of lesser importance. Also, the setting can promote certain aspects of the gem whilst mitigating others, again allowing better pricing performance.

My stbx wore a relatively inexpensive .72ct G/SI2/EX/EX in her e-ring which faced up much bigger (people always commented on that) simply because of the cut and setting. I bought it from a jeweler in NYC for 1200.00 and spent another couple hundred for a new mount, retaining the side diamonds which came with the original ring :)

If the OP wishes to explore and understand gemology and diamonds a bit further, I can direct him to some resources. Let me know. Personally, I would not buy a 'name', because I know how much quality and size you can get on the open market for a competitive price. BTW, a loose gem in the 1.1-1.2ct range can be had for the prices in the OP, if one shops around. YMMV :)

personally, i like the first one, i prefer the setting, its more simple and elegant.

With a diamond of that size, and it being a round cut you wont see the imperfections, if it was a different cut you might, but round or princess cut would be fine.

the pictures are a generalisation, and not true to how big the diamond will really look.
