If a guy asks a girl's parents' permission to ask her to marry him; then asks the girl to marry him, and she declines, what is the proper way to address this issue to the parents?

Is it acceptable to say nothing and let them figure it out (either assume he didn't ask or he was declined)?

Should one or the other person say something to the parents? Who should do it?

Is there a third (or fourth or fifth) option?

What would Miss Manners say??

These are her parents and she declined. Totally her responsibility. I've had to do it more than once. It's no fun.

Yes, she needs to do it herself. It's never a crowd pleaser, but if she can frame it from the fact that she just had a feeling this man wasn't for her and she would be making a mistake. The parents might not be as angry/upset/disappointed.

And why should you ask the girl's parents first when considering marriage?? Why not just ask the girl in the first place. Why are the parents more important than the woman you want to be with? It's not like you're gonna marry the parents....
