If they've been together for five years than she's undoubtedly know about this before now. Obviously something's changed in the relationship that she's now second-guessing.

 

If she's truly interested in him as a person and partner, then the marriage contract is secondary. It's no guarantee of anything, never really has been.

 

Sounds to me like some sort of test that she's putting him through. ("If you really love me, you'll do X" even if X goes against every fibre of his being.)

 

If the roles were reversed - for instance, if he wanted her to do something that she's against as some sort of "proof of love" - I'd suggest that she dump his sorry a$$.
