Obviously I can get a bigger diamond if the clarity and color are less.

I'm curious what some of you prefer, the bigger rock or the better quality stone but smaller?

I know I need white gold/platinum and round cut.

I'm a def. colour and clarity person over size, hands down.

But that doesn't mean your SO is the same. Were any of your friends recently engaged or married? If so, you can somehow work the topic into the discussion, without alerting her to your, I'm guessing, surprise proposal. Or if you have a female accomplice, like your (don't trust hers to keep close-mouthed!) sister or mother, maybe she can find out.

how much money are we talking about? if it is a small diamond then definitely you need bigger size and less quality. and what is quality to you? E VVS1, F VS2? I think most people are going to prefer a 1 ct H SI1 over a tiny E VVS1. But 3 ct F VS2 is much better than 4ct H SI1. it depends on your budget and what you are looking for.

a tiny diamond is.. tiny.. even if it is high quality, it is tiny. so go to a normal size and fair quality ... but a large diamond that sparkles is better than a larger diamond that is dull

I want to go between .75 and 1 Carat. I didn't plan on going the lowest quality regardless, but figured I could get closer to 1 Carat if I go a little lower on the color and clarity.

The size you are looking for is great in a round stone. In fact, sometimes the round stones are cut wider and shallower which gives even a lesser quality stone more shine and bling. And remember...although it can be obvious to even a casual observer that a huge stone is fake or crappy....most of us cant look at a diamond and know its selling details. Look at the stone or the ring, and if it sparkles like you want it to...thats enough. Most stones , you cant tell so much about them until you are holding it right next to a better stone...and when its being worn, thats rarely the case.

my sister is notoriously bxtchy about her jewelry, has to be the biggest and the best, even though she cannot wear a fraction of the stuff. She is the kind who will make passive aggressive comments about someone else's "inferior" jewelry, even if the wearer likes it because there's meaning behind the piece. So, you'll need to find out which camp your recipient is in: Jewelry snob or someone who appreciates the gift because of who it's from and why it was given.

that said, my 2 cents is to recommend you go with quality.

I agreed.

I would much rather go for color and clarity over size. As long as I can see the diamond and it's not a little speck -- I am happy as a clam
