redfathom Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 I work in a cubicle enviroment, and everyone around me talks, and talks, and talks. They talk to each other, they talk on the phone to friends, they watch videos together then talk about them, they read out load, they sing to themselves, it'a almost endless. And it's all day and at the same time...so you have eight people all talking at the same time. They even eat their lunch in the same space... It makes me want to pull one of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp6H9hR4nIM
Trialbyfire Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 If your company allows it, get a set of headphones so you can listen to music that you enjoy. This way, you can focus on your work without getting annoyed or distracted.
kizik Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Yes. I work in a cube, and people need to be quiet!
In_Repair Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Hell, I don't even work in a cubicle. I supervise a manufacturing facility and my little office is right in the middle of all the noisy machinery... and I still wish I could get everyone around me to just STFU... I banned radios... they went to headphones, which just makes it so they can't hear either the machine they are working on or any impending danger around them, so they got banned too... now the bastards run around singing all damn day!
Thaddeus Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 It makes me want to pull one of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp6H9hR4nIM Love it! Made me laugh out loud!
Odyssey Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Yeah, i'd used to work in an office just like that too, it upsets me when i can't hear the other person on the phone. I had to tell 'em to shut up once. That's the worst. Sometimes i would sneak a pair of ear plugs up from the factory - bliss Then going down stairs into the factory doesn't help, with all the different mix of radio channels (and yes singing too)... it's bad enough already with all the machines and power tools. I'm sure there's a certain dB level before it's actually a health risk & illegal.
zoe1983 Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 haha i feel your pain...i work in the cubical environment too and it blows my mind the things people do! From the obnoxious off key singing to the personal phone calls that everyone can overhear...it just amazes me the things people will do! We have one guy from another country who pretends like he is talking to customers all day when it is obvious he is on a personal call because he is speaking in his native language! My big pet peeve is when people just start talking and you have no idea if they are talking to you in particular or to themselves or to the whole office! One of my bosses is famous for this!
Jilly Bean Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Red - who is that cartoon guy who works in a cubie? Was it Dilbert? And he would have these fantasies about going crazy on his coworkers, and all the stupid cubie things they would do? Are you in a position to ask you boss to impose some rules of conduct? I would think if you're on the phone with customers, etc., the background noise would be pretty unprofessional. That could be your argument.
