At what age do you think it becomes unattractive and inappropriate to be going out regularly and getting totally smashed?

I may sound like an old fogey but I don't think at any age it is appropriate to be going out regularly and getting totally smashed. It is great to go out regularly but I don't ever find "totally smashed" attractive.

In regards to partying, my turn offs are:

- people in their 30s (special occasions are exceptions, it's a turn off if it's weekly)

- being excited about mid-week drinking (again, a couple drinks at HH are OK, but do you really need to get wasted?)

- "I'm just going to have a couple drinks" turns into being totally hammered

- When someone has partied hard all through their 20s, yet they continue to do so - um, isn't it out of your system yet?

There are probably more, but that's what comes to mind.

I think by your late 20's it should be at most an occasional thing and probably done with by your 30's. The only time I see it as really something to overlook is early 20's when you're clueless.

Come your 40's I think it's appropriate to get smashed but do it in your home, nobody wants to see that out on the street. ;)

Getting totally smashed is unattractive at any age. I can understand that sort of behaviour from very young people who are still experimenting with alcohol and don't know their limits, but by the time someone reaches the age of about 23-24 they should really have gotten over that and be able to have a good time and a few drinks without getting totally smashed.

I think it just depends on your definition of "too much partying".

My group of girlfriends probably go out at least twice a week (at least I do). It's normally HH. It's rare I ever get wasted.

I have a guy friend I have known since 7th grade. He is friends with my roommate and comes over a few times a week. As much as I think he's a great guy and all, he annoys me to no end with his tales of how wasted he was. Every story starts with "omg, I was so wasted last Friday and then we went golfing and blah blah blah". It's just immature and makes him seem really boring.

So yes, I am 26 and I think getting wasted regularly is pretty lame. Of course there are exceptions and I am definitely not a buzz kill ;)

:D:D:D

I learned the hard way that elevation screws with your tolerance.

Any but ways... I think it also depends on where you are living / grew up. Some places it is quit normal to hit up the bar every other weekend. I know of this town back home that only consists of two bars and an ace hardware :p

I don't think going out and having drinks is inappropriate at any age. Getting wasted should be a rare occurrence once you are past 25. It still happens sometimes, but not all that much.

I like to go out. I HATE getting wasted. I have friends who love it. I was never a "get wasted" kind of person. I just like going out and having a fun time.

I'm 25 and sick of it. I don't think I would date someone that wants to get mid-week drunk. A few drinks at Happy Hour is enough, plus I get violent hangovers now. I guess I'm getting old. :o

There seems to be a bit of a consensus here.

I'm in my 20s (recently graduated from college); bf is in his 30s. I like to go out and have a good time, and I want him to also...but he goes out more than me, and when he does go out (or we go out together) he drinks waaay more than me. And I don't mean # of drinks (he's a boy, I expect him to drink a higher # of drinks than me), I mean level of drunk-ness.

Partly I think I'm too old to get really drunk all the time, and partly it's out of respect for him (as in, if I go out without him, I'm not going to drink too much out of respect to him and our relationship; if I go out with him I'm not going to drink too much so his friends aren't like "ew she drinks too much, why are you dating someone like that" out of respect for him).

I think there's something wrong with this picture. I'm thinking of breaking up with him over this. I've mentioned a couple times that I don't like how wasted he gets and he got defensive.

How long have you been dating? It sounds like maybe initially what you had in common was partying, but that's not the case anymore since you "grew up" so to speak? Is that possible?

I am 23 years old and just realized that partying and getting smashed is definately out of my system already. I realized it this weekend when a group of friends and I took a weekend get away somewhere that is like a party town. I was the only one who didn't get smashed every night. I was the only who didn't wake up every morning with a hangover, and I was the first one to hit the sheets every night. I just don't like getting sloppy...it was so annoying by the end of the trip, but I was the only one who didn't feel like sh*t coming home on monday and I'm glad I didn't get crazy. My bf is 30 years old, so he doesn't go out much, so we don't usually go out much either. I'm content sitting at home relaxing with my partner.

It's considered unattractive when it deviates from another person's cultural expectations. Nothing more, really. In some places and times some people even get their panties in a knot just because someone else doesn't drink.

Trying to adjust one's life to fit those sorts of whims is a pointless exercise in futility. It's much better just to find things to do (whether or not they include drunken partying) and enjoy them for what they are and/or provide.
