So in my GF's facebook there are people writing on her wall who are not listed as friends. The name appears in black instead of blue. Is anybody an expert on facebook that could explain the reason for this? cheers

They have private/protected profiles. Only their friends can see their information. It has nothing to do with anything your gf did (ie trying to hide them from you).

you can change the setting in" Privacy" I believe. it is up to the user, not your gf.

People from "my network", which, in my case, is my University, can have access to my profile without going through the friending process. If that's the case for her, she can limit the access in her privacy settings, as l4gg pointed out.

I'm pretty sure that even if you have a public profile you can't leave comments or posts if you're not friends though?

I think they're probably her friend on fb, just have private profiles.

One of my bf's ex-gf's did this. Her profile privacy settings were such that her name was black (no hyperlink to her profile or search page), her default picture didn't show, and she didn't show up in his friends or in a search of her name. But I could see that she posted on his wall, and I know for a fact that they were friends on fb, despite not being able to see that they were.

Either way, it's still not anything your gf has control over.

On a different note, what exactly is 'my network'? Is that when you become a fan of something?

It just means that the person who has their name in black has the highest possible privacy settings. They can't be seen, added, or spoken to w/o their permission.

Its usually your college. Could be high school or work place and other things maybe.

When you sign up for facebook you join a network:

Your high school, college/university, or company's (if they have one) network using an email address from one of those to confirm you do in fact belong to that network; a regional network (city or closest city to your location); or "no network".

When you join a network, facebook automatically grants every other person in that network access to your profile. If you want a more private profile you have to change your privacy settings.
