Well, not exactly a friend - my bf's ex-gf (the engaged one)

I'm trying to decide whether or not I should apply to her company (she thinks if she refers me I'm pretty much guaranteed a job - who knows if that's for real, but...). My dilemma is this:

The position is not one I would stay in for any long period of time - basically I would be looking for another job for more money and within my field (or a different field that I'm actually interested in and would have more upward mobility) while working in this job.

She's only been there for 6 months, and is leaving to go back to school.

I don't want to be a douche and leave after a short period of time, since that reflects badly on her for referring me, but if she's leaving anyways, is it OK?

I don't know if I should ask her to refer me, or just apply on my own.

**Edit: She's actually putting off going back to school, and so will be staying with the company in the meantime. What do people think?

**Also: what's the etiquette on this? I have two other friends who's companies are hiring and they passed along my resume. They're not super good friends, where I would feel comfortable just calling them up and asking if they did it and if they knew anything. What's the proper way to follow up with them on this?

Interview experience is a good thing- even if you are not really that interested in the job.

is this position within your field of work?

i would say do the interview and all that stuff for parctice, if nothing else. tell the company your future plans, be straight forward.... "i am interested in the position, but i would realy like to grow into XXX field"

references can be good or bad- depending on the person referring you.... is she a twit? do you think she is respected at work? does she do well at her job?

any of her negative/ positive traits may cast a light upon you- even if you do not really know her.

as for following up with references from aquaintences... i think a simple email is all that is needed- ask if they had time to submit your resume, you appreciate them thinking of you and adding in your contact info if they want to call you back.
