Seriously, how do people get a job in this economy? All of my networking is turning up dead ends.

Depending on the job field, one sometimes needs to go where the supply and demand are high in that career choice.

Which sometimes means a change of residency.

With the plethora of internet sites, job resumes can be spewed to thousands of business's. I know. My job requires the fielding of these resume's and some are real humdingers!

I guess in bad times you have to either:

- Change careers

- Take a paycut

- Apply for more menial jobs

- Move to a better area

- Hone your skillset in an area that's hiring

- Try to make money in other ways (online marketing etc)

- Be pro-active and not just apply for jobs that are listed

- Join the army

 So far of what you listed joining the army is the only thing I could do that I'm not doing - and the only people that would probably actually take me.

I'm willing to: change careers, take a paycut, move to a "better" area; however, for example, taking a paycut follows with applying for more menial jobs - and since I have a masters degree, I'm overqualified and therefore more menial jobs don't want me. Also can't afford to "hone my skillset" further than it is. Already being proactive.

As far as moving, I'm already in an area that has hundreds or thousands more jobs than any other part of the country that I'm aware of.

I hate throwing out excuses and explaining why all your (good and relevant) ideas won't/aren't working for me, but I'm so damn frustrated right now.

The hardest and most soul-crushing job on the planet (next, possibly, to being George Bush's press agent) is looking for work.

From the sounds of it, New Again, you're doing all the right things. Now, I'm not going to sit here and blow sunshine up your skirt and tell you, "The perfect job is just around the corner!" and "It will happen when it happens, so be patient!" and other such inanities because they're just not based in reality.

All I can suggest is to keep plugging away. It's tough, I know, but the alternative is... well... is there one?

even though you have a masters I'd sugest just taking a menial job if your making no money right now. Then just keep trying to get interviews and stuff

Ive tried applying to fast food places that are hiring but im told that im too overqualified. The place i live is a small town so everyone knows everyone so me not putting down that i went to college is no good lol they know i went bc they were in hs with me lol.

Just keep the faith...my other jobless buddies come home after job hunting and have a nice stiff drink. I on the other cant do that since alcohol is not allowed in my rents home bc its sinful .....

just keep trucking thats all you can do.

Keep trying, New Again. Networking didn't work for me either. I landed a job "blind" through a job board. It took them two months to get back to me, but once the ball started rolling it happened very quickly. I used Indeed dot com to monitor all job boards... and I did not limit my job search to the town I was living in. (I am relocating out-of-state for this position.)

Just keep trying, keep applying to everything that looks like a good fit. Don't give up. Something is going to break for you before too long. The tide is turning out there.

If I could get a menial job, I'd take it. :o What I was trying to say is, I'm having a hard time even getting that type of job, because I'm so overqualified - they don't want to hire someone who looks like they'll leave ASAP.

You have no idea how happy I am to hear that that type of search actually worked for someone! Congrats.

Don't be disheartened NewAgain. Like you i have been turned down with the "being over qualified" BS - but they know you will just leave for something better. Even part-time work is hard to get.

Your not alone. (uhh...which is part of the problem).

sad part is according to some unemployed people are just lazy and dont want to find work :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:. The main ones usually yelling this from the rooftops HAVE JOBS.Instead of being so critical they should do a double check that they arent going to lose their job position. Things are so bad anyone can get canned anytime anywhere. My state is so bad they arent even hiring TEACHERS...i mean arent teachers always needed lol?

Agree 100%. The best thing to do is just keep at it and try not to let it get you down.

Some people may tell you that if you network hard enough you'll never be without work but those people are f**king morons. :D

Pretty much no one is hiring teachers - and as a result all substitute teachers have teaching certification and master's degrees - and are making roughly 12K a year before taxes.
