kizik Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 "kizik, based upon what I am hearing regarding your performance and hours, we are going to need to have a review on you when I get back. Thanks." I can't tell you how much I hate when people do this kind of thing - "you're in trouble, but I can't tell you what about" or "I have a secret! Can't tell you!" It's obvious I'm in trouble, but beeotch won't even tell me why! And I have to wait in this suspended limbo state until Tuesday to find out if I even have a job. Anyone else had this happen? Ya feel me?
SoleMate Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Yes, it is a big drag. The best way to handle it is just assume the best, and whatever your boss says you need to do to improve, agree cheerfully. Then do it. Good chance it will blow over.
northstar1 Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Did you forget to attach the cover on the TPS report again? That's poor management right there. She should have either contacted you before she left and gone over it, or waited until she got back to talk to you. This 'make you sweat for the weekend' tactic is weak. I've always had pretty straight up bosses, so I haven't had this happen before, well unless you count when I was a bagboy in a grocery store and they'd punish me by making me clean out the garbage compactor in the middle of the summer.
OpenBook Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Your boss's email tells me three things: #1: You still have a job. If you didn't, trust me - they would not be giving you an advance notice like this! #2: Your boss is trying to "keep you on your toes" while she's away from the office. #3: Someone in the office is ratting you out to the boss. Best way to handle this is exactly what SoleMate said: whatever your boss says you need to do to improve, agree cheerfully. Then do it. And I would find out who the ratfink minion is in your office.
Author kizik Posted September 5, 2009 Author Posted September 5, 2009 OB, you're right on all three counts. And I know who the rat is. And I'm gonna flush him out like the f*ckin' vermin he is. It'll be a lot like The Departed.
Tayla Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 "kizik, based upon what I am hearing regarding your performance and hours, we are going to need to have a review on you when I get back. Thanks." I can't tell you how much I hate when people do this kind of thing - "you're in trouble, but I can't tell you what about" or "I have a secret! Can't tell you!" Ya feel me? When I first read the commentary by your boss , I took it as - Maybe the boss GOT some good feedback about your performance and hours and wanted to sit down and discuss it". Since I dont know the history that was my take. An innocent mind doesn't stress. Refrain from speculation. The reality is. You don't know yet. And yes , I do understand someone giving partial indications without fully explaining what the true goal is for the meeting.
Author kizik Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 Good points, Tayla, but I can assure you from the email's tone, this aint no "good review". You're right that I don't know sh*t yet, though.
allina Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 And I know who the rat is. And I'm gonna flush him out like the f*ckin' vermin he is. It'll be a lot like The Departed. Ok so if you know who the rat is, what is there for the rat to report? You seem pretty hostile with this person suggesting that you and they, know you did something wrong.
Author kizik Posted September 7, 2009 Author Posted September 7, 2009 The rat can report that I've been f*cking around on the internet at work. But I've stopped doing that, so hopefully it won't be an issue.
Author kizik Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 Hi GT, yep, I'm on a 30-day probationary period to show 'em I can complete assignments in a timely fashion. Which I already do... don't ask me. Grin and say, "Yes boss!"
Jilly Bean Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Well, I think she basically said what the problem is. You are not doing your job well, and you are not putting in time. Kizik - rather than be annoyed by her seemingly cryptic message, I suggest you get your resume together, and start job hunting. An email like this from the boss is never a good sign...
Vlad Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 So she asked you to do something you already do and instead of asking her to give you more insight about her concern you just grin and say: "yes boss"? You must not cared much about your job do you?
GorillaTheater Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Jeez, good luck. Not to start up with the "negative waves", but is this just a misunderstanding or is it possible that they're easing you out the door? Just in case, you may want to start putting feelers out elsewhere, even though it's a f*cked time time to look for another job. But in the meantime, do the job to the best of your ability.
Author kizik Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 You guys are a bunch of downers. No, I'm not looking for another job. I'm going to "step up" at this one.
GorillaTheater Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Good enough for me. Knock 'em dead, man.
Author kizik Posted September 9, 2009 Author Posted September 9, 2009 Thanks GT. I'll work for you one day in TX... doing something local and fun. Like dung flinging.
GorillaTheater Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Thanks GT. I'll work for you one day in TX... doing something local and fun. Like dung flinging. I'm a lawyer, so that's vocational with me.
Author kizik Posted September 9, 2009 Author Posted September 9, 2009 Then you should know that the b*tch giving me sh*t is a paralegal at the law firm where I work.
JamesM Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 If you have been doing what she said you need to start doing, then why is she telling you that you are on probation? Either you are or you aren't. Is she hearing lies or is it something she can confirm visually? I ask because if she is relying on hearsay, then if someone doesn't like you, then this person can still get you fired.
GorillaTheater Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 Do you feel that she's being unfair? If so, you might want to talk to the managing partner. There's a better than even shot that she can't fire you unilaterally and would have to get the termination approved by that partner.
Author kizik Posted September 9, 2009 Author Posted September 9, 2009 I appreciate the thoughts. It's all good. I'm not going to talk to anyone about anyone. I am just going to ride through it and make that f*ckin paycheck, baybee.
Star Gazer Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 Then you should know that the b*tch giving me sh*t is a paralegal at the law firm where I work. So, you're a file clerk? A legal assistant? Mailroom? What? Timely completion of assignments in a law firm is CRITICAL.
Author kizik Posted September 17, 2009 Author Posted September 17, 2009 So, you're a file clerk? A legal assistant? Mailroom? What? Timely completion of assignments in a law firm is CRITICAL. Thanks
Mary3 Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 The rat can report that I've been f*cking around on the internet at work. But I've stopped doing that, so hopefully it won't be an issue. Can you use a small lap top to do private mails or web searches ? I wanted to think positive about your email from the boss. Maybe , just maybe , your performance is great and they want to UP your hours...I know its happy thinking but hey why not until you hear the real thing ?
