TrustInYourself Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I get so much crap over telling my wife her proposed baby names are horrible. I feel like I should be honest, but am I crossing a line by being brutally honest? I told her the name she chose recently made me cringe and that I could not do it. It's a variation of her sister's name, which I informed her meant she better be ready to start worshipping. I want to be supportive, but I also dislike the name. I'm at the point where I am just going to remove myself from the decision making process because she's being difficult with me.
TaraMaiden Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 So, let her choose the name, with one proviso: you can give the baby a pet or nickname, and use it when you want.
GorillaTheater Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 My wife and I had problems agreeing to most of our kids' names. Son #2 went the first day or two of his life without a name. One possibility is to draw up a list of prefered names and see if they intersect. I think weird family names have a place, but only as middle names (we've done that).
Lizzie60 Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I'm at the point where I am just going to remove myself from the decision making process because she's being difficult with me. That's probably what she's hoping for.. You need to find a compromise.. it's not just about ONE parent choosing the name.. both HAVE to agree..
silverfish Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Sometimes it's easier to wait until the baby is born and see how you feel then. We had a list of ten names but our littlest just looked like his name...he still does really! Also you need to think about the combinations / shortened versions, and I agree, leave strange family 'heritage' names for middle names. Do you know if it's a boy or girl yet?
IfWishesWereHorses Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I was dead set on my daughter's name, though I offered up two or three that I would be agreeable with. Luckily my H hated those. Two sons were easy though he would have liked a Jr. and I was dead set against it because of trouble my father had had being a JR. Those two sons were easy. My third son wee couldn't come to an agreement. Finally, we hit on one that we both like. I think for the first child that woman have been thinking about it for years. With subsequent children it gets better. It might just grow on you, my H's family was dead set against my D's name, and they now say they can't imagine her being anything else.
Author TrustInYourself Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 It's a girl, due in the next few weeks. It's our second and I just have a hard time with this name since it is very unique combination of a few names. I have a unique name and I am not sure I am cool with her suggestion, but I want to be open to her feelings since I basically named our first one. I think I am willing to listen and be open to what she wants as a first name and just do the middle name. We have a list but they are completely different.
Lizzie60 Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Gawd I hate those names made with parts of other names..
Meaplus3 Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Picking a name for a new baby is not always easy. I've been there 3 times. I think it's best for you both to sit down and put a bunch of names on the table. Then try your best to compromise while narrowing down your favorites and not so favorites. I remember my mom told be that if my younger brother had been a girl.. his name would have been Sabre. I laughed when I heard that my dad had a real hard time with that one. Anway, good luck to you. And enjoy that new little one when he or she arrives. Mea:)
LovieDove24 Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Can you please just tell us what the godawful name is already?!:bunny:
laRubiaBonita Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Gawd I hate those names made with parts of other names.. my husband already has a girl named picked out that is a combo of both our names..... it crackes me up! but i hate the name!!!! he brought it up randomly- "what do you think of the name_____?" i said ewe:sick:, that's one of the worst names ever... why do ask? then he explained that is a combo of our names.... which made it slightly better, so i told him he could definatly name our first dog that name!

I think I am willing to listen and be open to what she wants as a first name and just do the middle name. We have a list but they are completely different. Congrats! I am having a girl in a couple weeks too! Have you made a list of names to show her at all? I like using this website, because you can look at popularity and people's points of view who actually HAVE the name (if you are concerned about how your kid feels about her name later in life at all).. http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/ The way we came to agree on a name was by looking at types of names we like. So for example, do you like girls with boy names (Taylor, Dylan, Marley), do you like unique names (Treva, Dara), do you like classic names (Olivia, Gweneviere), do you like common names (Amanda, Ashley) nature names (Autumn, Sky). When you find common ground there, it's easier to find a name. So lets say she likes names like Olivia and Gweneviere.. you can shorten those down into other names like Ollie or Gwen. Naming can be fun. Might want to compare the lists and find a compromise or common ground. What were the names she suggested, I want to hear them lol
Eve Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 I would be interested to hear the name suggestions too. How bad can they be? Take care, Eve xx
laRubiaBonita Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 I would be interested to hear the name suggestions too. How bad can they be? Take care, Eve xx if it's Haley... that's bad!
Eve Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 if it's Haley... that's bad! Cant be as bad as 'blanket'... what was that about? I really like the name 'Gracie'.. Take care, Eve xx
laRubiaBonita Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Cant be as bad as 'blanket'... what was that about? I really like the name 'Gracie'.. Take care, Eve xx i like gracie too! unfortunately i named my cat gracie, so i can't use that one... although i had a teacher that named her daughter after her dog- Buffy.... omg!!!! what a horrid name! my husbands name that he came up with that i think is a dog name (at best) is Searah....... i hate that name! i like the way he spelled Searah, but i would never name my girl child that. i like classic name, i was named after my great grandmothers, so i want to name my first daughter after her great grandmothers.... he name would be Evelyn... which, incidentially, has the nickname of Eve!
AlektraClementine Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Tough situation. You're getting good advice. I like the idea of drawing up independent lists and see if you get any intersecting names. My exH and I definitely had to veto some of each other's choices. Oddly enough, our girl name was picked out by him and I absolutely adore. it. My current partner and I are already talking baby names for the future. Getting out of the way early!

Yeah Gracie is a good name. Its cute. I dont think that a child would mind being named after a cat! Its an interesting story for them to tell! I share your love of old fashioned names.. love them, love them, love them! Mostly they seem to be very classy. I adore 'Connie' as well. Beautiful name. My daughter was saying the other day that there is usually an uncanny clarity within photographs of persons of the older generation and their actual characters in real life. Maybe this is why I love old photos so much? I have tried to accomplish this match of spirit and character within naming my children. Their names came to me whilst I was pregnant. The spelling of Sarah you mentioned is good but I too do not like the name. Its rather bland. Btw, my name isnt Eve in real life.. I have a very unusual name, not heard of anyone else with it.. ever. But yeah, I love the name 'Eve' .. 'Evelyn' is very classy indeed. 'Mea' is a good name too.. I hope the OP shares the name suggestions with us. Take care, Eve xx P.s Buffy is a very weird name to name a child... Excellent for a dog though!
silverfish Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Cool a girl! I have 2 boys so never got to do girls names. But if i did...I have a thing about three syllable girls names like Emily & Clementine. My favourite name ever is my friends girl Scarlett. I also love Grace, Lily, Eva, and those 30's starlet names. I think seperate lists is a good idea - don't confer though! And she WILL 'look' like her name when you see her, I'm sure you'll just sort of 'know'
shadowplay Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 My future kids' names. Boy = Julian Girl = Ava (possibly, but has become too popular), Sanja (first heard from a LS user I like who has this name ), Vera, Adie or Annie.
GorillaTheater Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Boy = Julian Expect some trouble with your SO over that one.
shadowplay Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Expect some trouble with your SO over that one. Why, too girly?
GorillaTheater Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Why, too girly? Just give him a middle name like "Dan" or "Steve" or "Tamerlane" so at least he has an option to turn to if wants to stop getting beat up. "Hey Julie! Time for fist city!" You know it's going to happen.
AlektraClementine Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 We've decided on Bruce for a boy and either Lily or Penny for a girl.
