Ilovecake Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Has anyone had chronic nightmares since their breakup? I have them almost every night, most not related at all to the relationship. I tend to wake up very anxious in the morning and way before my alarm clock goes off, I'm wondering if that's why. My therapist and I have been trying to figure it out. She said waking up too early in the morning is a sign of depression but nothing we have tried, including medication has worked. Just wondering if this has been happening to anyone else and what you do about it, if anything?

For a few weeks after my break up I was waking up extremely early too. The nightmares persist. And all are rather vivid. I tried Herbal Tea. It actually worked. There is two types I drink before bed: Yogi Tea- Kava Stress Relief Yogi Tea- Bedtime tea Both with a dash of honey. It warms you up and calms the senses.
HBJen Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Ahhh - I suffer from this too. Pre-Breakup, I was a sleep in all the time kind of girl - now, I go to bed at like 2:30 am and wake up at 7:00 - wide awake, anxious from crazy dreams. Herbal tea sounds like a good try though forsure (Thanks Brian)
silic0ntoad Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 No problem Jen. It helpd me. Give it a shot.
deux ex machina Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 I had nightmares and interrupted sleep patterns for weeks before the final thing happened. Lol. I knew it was coming, so did my subconscious, apparently. I think it's normal, a lot of stuff is being processed.
GrayClouds Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 Yep, me too. things that helped me: journal before bed (do it with pen and paper not computer.) and don't hold back...it helps to get it out before trying to sleep. write fast and hard and angry and sad. it does not even have to be legible. Write until your tired of writing. Exercise earlier and wear yourself out even if its just walking...IF you wake up early and cant sleep go for a walk then do it again after work, get physically tired. It give the head good chemicals while makes you tired at night. Stay away from alcohol. Doing these help me sleep much better in about a week and a half. Depending on what meds your on they may effect sleep in the beginning also most needs about 4 weeks before the help and side effect diminish
Author Ilovecake Posted September 3, 2009 Author Posted September 3, 2009 "Exercise earlier and wear yourself out even if its just walking..." that is the only time I sleep well, when I go for a very long walk. I think it's the fresh air as much as just exhausting myself. Exercise alone doesn't do it for me. I also practice yoga and meditation but neither helps with the sleeping problems. I will definitely try the herbal tea as well.
rubo Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 Not nightmares..but I think that there is a period where you dream about the other person. I dremt about my ex about 2-3 weeks after our break up, but suddenly it stopped, and now I just can't sleep as much. I wake up at almost the exact same time everyday, and can't sleep anymore...very frustrating since I used to be able to sleep all day long. Anyway.. sounds healthy that you have a therapist, and the urbal tea might help. Gonna try that to. Good luck
JLT123 Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 I have vivd dreams about her all the time and it just compounds things. I pray every night they don't occur, but when they do they usually wake me up at around 4:30 and I can't get back to sleep, so I toss and turn thinking about it and finally decide to get up before my alarm goes off. It sucks, but hey, I've been getting to work before everyone else. I had no idea waking up early was a sign of depression, though. Makes sense considering I'm extremely depressed.
