deux ex machina Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Not at all. Jackie was a great example of a very conservative style which was timeless, feminine and sexy. This was very much a style emulated by women of my mother's generation. Jackie was a trend-setter. If this is how you feel, and it speaks to you, it's your authentic self. +1 Jackie
caramel c Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Um. It certainly seems you are feeling more than a little down on yourself? You do know that is no one's responsibility, do you not? * Miss Jones - fit is so important when it comes to clothing looking great. Wearing conservative clothes with a bit of edge helps. It's something you can get an eye for, if you have the aesthetic sense to envision what "works" well for you. Conservative can be very sexy indeed. More sexy than showing a lot of skin. If done right. A suggestion? Go to a higher-end store and seek out a stylist to help you. A great stylist can make all of the difference. This is what their career, doing this sort of thing - take advantage of this service. I've never known any to charge for it. And never forget: fit is the biggest thing. It can make or break a look. Good luck. Oh yes I agree, and that's why I believe in alterations. They can make a HUGE difference in how your clothes fit on you. Tailor your clothing if needed for a perfect fit.
tkgirl Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 My mom was 5'6" and modeled clothing in the 50's, mainly print ads. She had that hourglass figure, even after having me. I still have some of the really high quality stuff she owned from that era and tried to keep it as new. Given the way she has declined with dementia, it was one small way of paying respect to who she was. There are also a lot of dress styles from the 40's and 50's which still drive fashion today. Vintage clothing has quite a following. Sexy is in the eye of the beholder. Thank goodness for variety (of tastes and preferences). I hope the OP finds her fit. so sweet about the homage to your mom, carhill. and you got me re-thinking vintage. I always liked it but never really thought it as "sexy".. I'm more of the layed back cali/surfer girl sort of sexy.. IMHO! but now I'm tempted to hit some vintage clothing stores this week oh.. and to the OP... remember, if you feel sexy then you are! it's as simple as that...
Myst Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 Okay, I just had to make a post about this. Conservative clothes are very comfortable, I feel more confident in them, and personally I feel like I'm not trying too hard. But since I am single and do want to find somebody, dressing conservatively almost gets me very little male attention. I can almost go days/weeks without a guy finding me sexually attractive. You pretty much go unacknowledged, men don't even bother to make eye contact with you. I wind up feeling so ugly and undesirable that I pull out a pair of tight jeans, and a tight shirt to feel like I am somebody I know they will say that dressing sexy attracts the wrong type of men, the shallow kind..but IMO, it seems that dressing sexy is needed to attract even the right kind of men, to get them to at least notice you. I dont have the typical tall, pretty figure (Im pretty average looking actually) (not saying you do or are too Miss Jones) however, I dress conservatively due to my upbringing and i still have guys check me out. I dress in the style like this http://totallyher.com/images/2008/12/forever-21-conservative-dress.jpg Im not advertising that particular shop, dont worry. They dont even have them in the country I live in. lol There are loads of 'sexy' conservative clothes. Seriously. PLUS the other posters are right. Confidence is sexy and guys do notice. So i think from my summary of other posters here, most are trying to say: Sexy= Confidence+clothes you are confident in+a positive attitude

Confidence is sexy and guys do notice. black turtlenecks are sexy! or so I'm told... I have a funny little story I have to share about this. I was about to go out on a second date with this really hot guy... had the bad boy edge etc. I was talking to my friend about what to wear and she goes "DON'T wear a turtleneck... whatever you do" And I was like, really why? So as an experiment (sort of) I decided to wear a nice fitted ribbed black turtleneck with a pair of nice jeans. I looked good and he noticed right away and was like "I like the turtleneck" and I couldn't help but laugh. A few days later he was out of town on business and sent me a text saying how good I looked in my turtleneck and jeans and we later joked how maybe I should just wear the turtleneck next time we.. uh hum.. anyways! the point of my story is again... sexy is as sexy does!
whiteberry Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I think, what's important is that you know how to carry yourself well. There's so many conservative dress yet fashionable. Just choose the one that fits you best.
D-Lish Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 Conservative is the kiss of death, it's like giving up on fashion, and yourself. If anyone ever described me as conservative (political or otherwise), I'd hang myself and call it a day. Doesn't matter what age you are~ there are always cool options. Seriously, as a woman, would you want to go down in history as being "a conservative dresser?" Jackie-O may be conservative NOW, but back in her day she was cutting edge. She was classy and stylish in her era- 40 years ago!
callingyouuu Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I don't think that dressing conservatively is the "kiss of death" in the dating world. I mean some of those gowns on the fashion runway are the complete opposite of conservative, but most girls these days would think twice about being so edgy. I mean some of those things have wings...*shiver* In terms of dress, the most important thing in my opinion is to find whatever is appropriate to the situation, your body type, and your personal style. It's alright to be conservative, and it's alright to sometimes go out on a limb once in a while. Don't wear something you don't like just to attract people of the opposite sex, and also be mindful that grody sweatpants and a t-shirt five sizes too large are pretty much inappropriate in every situation but a retirement home where everyone's eyes are too blurred to see what you wear.
silverfish Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 Just out of interest. Would you consider this dress conservative? http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/55019126&bklist=icat,5,shop,women,dresses,smartdresses Its from a UK shop that I buy a lot of stuff from and it's my kind of thing. I like it a lot and thought it looked good on me. I would wear it with flat ballet shoes type thing as I am tall (5' 11) My sister is trying to get me to stop wearing this sort of stuff and more of this type thing.... http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/55012202&bklist=icat,5,shop,women,dresses,eveningdresses She things I should wear heels and lots of jewellery...probably because it's her style. This would be to wear to go out for a meal then to a bar for cocktails, but nowhere too fancy. I like that more conservative style 50's clothing too but the women were smaller then so vintage stuff doesn't fit me!

The first dress was cute... not too sure about the color though... a little drab. The second dress was maybe more "sexy" in the style, but I could do without all the "stuff"... made it look kind of cheap IMO. I dunno... I think whatever one feels the most comfortable in.... but if you are looking to attract guys I find what works is how confident you are in whatever you are wearing... you gotta rock it though!
Pink Cupcakes Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 I think people might be thinking "conservative" means "frumpy" and I am a bit confused. I wear button down blouses from Gap, Ann Taylor, JCrew to work, and feel perfectly hip enough looking to go out on the town if I have a date or an outing with friends that evening and not need to change. I wear skirts a lot to work, but nothing too short but I still look darned great I think. I do get noticed by guys. I can't even tell you how many single dads of my students have asked me out over the years. Hell, last year I wore a black turtleneck sweater (not form fitting), grey knee length skirt, tights, and pumps to conferences and received a dozen long stemmed roses delivered to school by a smitten single dad. I wasn't interested, but...well, wouldn't you say said outfit is pretty conservative? I can't wear low tops to work, that just would not be appropriate. I think people think I look put together and classy. I still think I look pretty hot and get complimented by students on my clothes quite a bit, actually. We're talking high school students. In the winter I wear cashmere cardigans, which I totally wear out on dates. Now sometimes I do wear the short skirts and lowcut tops, but not to work. I can't afford to spend a fortune on clothes so my "conservative" work clothes have to double a lot of the time for going out clothes. It works for me and the guys go for it.
