loveslife Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 What do you think? I've been thinking about relationships during my hiatus from dating. I've realized that nothing keeps a relationship from being fulfilling more than a lack of a healthy respect for one another. Love and respect are both important for healthy relationships (including relationships with ourselves) but are they a part of the same emotion?
goldencloud Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I sincerely believe love without respect is fruitless. You might love someone, but without respect, there will be no boundaries and one might be taken for granted. When you don't respect someone, you start to see them lower and lower as a person, and somehow that has a tendency to override any feelings of love you may have carried.

But is love without respect really love? Recently someone I loved did something which made me lose respect for him. I found that I also no longer loved him. Maybe it's safe to say that respect is a part of a healthy love?
Author loveslife Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 Romantically? No. Familially? Sure. Yes, this thought occurred to me as well. With family the bond may be strong enough that there is just always love no matter what. But, right, romantically I just don't see it as possible.

You have to understand I loved this guy SO MUCH...but through a series of acts, I lost respect for him. I really tried and tried to hold on to the relationship because gosh darnit I LOVED HIM...but it was a useless exercise in futility because without respect, love= irrelevant as worn out socks with large holes...

Yes, that's exactly what happened with me! Thanks for sharing that.
