I've been on a diet and exercising for a while now and have come to conclude that portion size is of the most important thngs. I've lost almost 20 pounds from eating smaller meals and allowing for small snacks spaced about 3 hours away. I do eat carbs, but I've reduced them to about two servings worth per meal until I get to my goal weight.

It's not that hard. If you got to McDonald's for example, you can eat a cheeseburger, but you can't have the fries. Save them for later.

The gist seems to be that people eat too much at one sitting, and that accounts for the weight loss, because the body doesn't have time to metabolize it.

Yes, portion size is very important.

When I moved from Michigan to Texas I was appalled at the size of the portions! Those folks who visit and are not used to Texas-sized services can't finish their meals. Texans are used to it and that's why we are one of the fattest states in the union -- the portions are HUGE!

I remember in school (one of the few things I remember from the 60's :) ) that a dinner plate should only have food in the center part -- not the raised section surrounding it. That is usually the part that is decorated. If you look at dinner plates, and saucers, the flat part in the center is usually very small in comparison to the plate. That's how I remember food being served too - the food was in the center.

Here in Texas a lot of restaurants don't serve food on a standard plate - they actually serve the meal on a huge platter! Yes - a big, oval, platter - like what you use to serve your Thanksgiving turkey! It's unreal! And the restaurants that do use dinner plates fill them to the edge. The only place to get a healthy size portion is at a Luby's cafeteria. I got so used to seeing those huge portions that when we do go to Luby's my husband complains that we just aren't getting as much for our money and he feel's cheated. I've heard other Texans say the same thing.

The more people eat, the more stretched out the stomach and the more needed to fill it, adding fat, carbs, calories, etc. Texas is notorious for BIG.
