m-j Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 hi everyone, just having a quarter-life crisis here. i need to know if everyone else has their careers figured out and how they did it? are you happy in your industry and how did you find out that it's what you wanted to do? i enjoy a lot of different industries and i cant decide on one. im not particularly good at anything (im a little bit good at everything) and it makes it even harder. i have done every career quiz on the planet and they all tell me to do something creative but that is not helping. my psychologist suggested running my own business but i have to decide what the business will be selling! thoughts?
Rudderless Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I'm cool with mine because I turned my hobby into my career. I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer as to how to figure out what you want. Some people take an interest in something from an early age and see it through, some people chase money/status, some people find something interesting later on. Perhaps you could take a few small steps and keep a lot of things going on to see what opportunities present themselves to you rather than just picking one thing.
bluewolf17 Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 a florist. I love doing arrangements and it makes me feel at ease.
Green Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 my life kinda sux right now career wise. But I'm doing something and taking my life in a direction and there is still hope and I'm trying to stay optomistic... so my advice is, pick something, anything... but pick it because you want it, and work hard at it, and enjoy it as best you can. Doing nothing and quiting is the only real way you can fail... lifes a journey not a destination.
sally4sara Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 a florist. I love doing arrangements and it makes me feel at ease. Oh me too! I remember when I use to think it was a peaceful job.......it still would be if not for the clients. I've grown to hate it. When I grow up I want to be a freckly, wrinkly old woman who has a generator, goats and garden for self sufficiency. When living becomes physically painful, I'll get hooked on horse and die.
Pedigree Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I'm still at uni and studying but I like the sound of this: I turned my hobby into my career.
borbiusle Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 I'm in the military now, I'm going to try for law enforcement (FBI, DEA, etc.) when I get out. I like jobs that let me get around to different places and have an impact on people, more positive than negative hopefully .
Quinch Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 I'm looking at a few options but the main one is freelance copywriter. I can work for myself, earn good money, do something creative and the start-up costs are low.
Ronni_W Posted August 29, 2009 Posted August 29, 2009 but i have to decide what the business will be selling! It's tough. One way to (try to) get clearer is to think in terms of what types of feelings you want to help your clients/customers experience; and how you want to feel about helping them do that. And then deciding what product or service will best facilitate all of that. When I was making decisions about my 'first' career, the planet was still in mode of choosing something that would satisfy "what do I want to do for the rest of my life?" But more and more people are enjoying multiple careers in a single lifetime. So, you could also ask "what would I love doing for the next 3 to 5 years?" Maybe this free, 9-minute audio will be helpful: http://www.audioacrobat.com/play/W06rgsD4 Best of luck.
Eve Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I think that often people do not know what they want to do until they hit thirty-something! Choosing the right environment was key for me. I changed career about .. gosh.. 14 years ago and volunteering within different environments helped me to find where I fit in. Be careful with starting your own business, it can be very lonely. I would see if you could hire a cheap office on an industrial estate as soon as possible if loneliness is an issue for you in any way shape or form. This way home and work can remain seperate. It is not good to become isolated. But overall, try and enjoy the process of choice you are experiencing above all else. Take care, Eve xx
Pyro Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 Going back to the University for a second degree. I lost the passion for my first degree, so I did some thinking and I believe that I am wired to be a teacher. I love explaining and teaching stuff to people. I'm almost done with my Bachelors, and then its right into grad school for a Masters. I wish I would've come to this realization when I was much younger then I am now (28) By now I would've had my Masters and teaching. Oh well, it is what it is.
allina Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I'm 26 and have no idea what I "want to be when I grow up." I never knew. In college I picked my major based on what classes were fun. I toyed with the idea of a post grad education but I decided that I don't even want a demanding career. I have a job now that I'm happy with. I like my co-workers, I like my schedule, make enough and I never have to work a minute over 37.5 hours. I know that we're supposed to strive for greater ambition but when it comes to work I just want to be comfortable and not have work take over my life.
mark982 Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 hell, i just turned 49 and i don't have a clue what i want to be,when i grow up!
caliguy999 Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 i really just live for the moment. i work part time, in a job that's not really a career but i don't care as i like doing it. i'm not planning to have a family or kids so i do whatever i feel like. if i quit tomorrow, then so be it.
Xelha Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 I'm still not quite sure what I want to do as a career, but I think it's usually important to find something that you enjoy doing. I hope to find a good job involving foreign languages someday, possibly as a translator or something like that.
rivermeetsanend Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I'm 23, in college...finishing up a Bachelor's degree in Communication. I don't know what I want to do! I envy people who know exactly what they want out of life. I have always been the type of person who rolls with the punches and goes wherever life takes me. :/
Trialbyfire Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 just having a quarter-life crisis here. i need to know if everyone else has their careers figured out and how they did it?My first love was Architecture. When I realized the talent wasn't there to be really good at it, I changed direction to my other interests, which were Finance and Econ. are you happy in your industry and how did you find out that it's what you wanted to do?Yes, I'm happy in my industry. I've always been fascinated with banking, investments, global politics and economics. i enjoy a lot of different industries and i cant decide on one. im not particularly good at anything (im a little bit good at everything) and it makes it even harder. i have done every career quiz on the planet and they all tell me to do something creative but that is not helping. my psychologist suggested running my own business but i have to decide what the business will be selling! thoughts?Surprisingly, business and finance is highly creative. This is intended both tongue in cheek and also, in all seriousness. I wouldn't necessarily suggest you immediately go into business on your own. Go work for someone/corporate america and learn the ropes. For that matter, take business/finance courses. If you don't plan to go for a doctorate, choose the MBA program. I chose the MSc program, since I didn't want to restrict the opportunity to go further. That I didn't, hasn't hurt my career. If I were ever to change my career direction, Securities/Corporate Law would be my next choice.
Pyro Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I want to be retarded. I don't think it'll take much.
shaunwu Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Hi M-J, I suggest try finding out yourself more. You might want to download my ebook. It's free by the way. Not much story telling but just simple techniques to help you find your career path. Let me know if you need any help. We can discuss.
Trojan John Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 I want to be... a fire truck. No, wait, a spaceship.
Kirstoffski Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Well, i'm 16, and i really want to be a actress. I got into HND Acting just 2 week ago,in a college 25 miles away! (Its' the 'best' acting college i was told) but due to discrimination (because of where i am from) i now have to leave. It's put me n a rut, i don't know what to do now. I can't transfer to my local college, cause all their courses r full except the HNC acting, so i'm hoping to get into that. If i don't, i have to go job hunting, and in this recession, i have a better chance of finding a needle in a haystack. If acting fails, then perhaps a spanish interpreter
ReturnToSender Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Im 32 and still trying to figure out what I wanna be when I grow up Ive really fallen into every job Ive ever had...they just came to me and it seemed like a cool thing to do, and till now Im still wow'ed that I get paid to do what I do. Best part is...Ive been able to work from home since kiddo was 4...shes 12 now and its a great thing that I can be a stay at home mom and I want to be able to keep that up till she graduates. So..I guess in 5 years, I can think about what I want to be and get a "real" job. Or not. haha! Anyway, at least its worked for me to not worry about it. That doesnt work for a lot of people I know...and most poeple need stability and a garunteed paycheck to not stress and worry. But Ive been really lucky so far...and I kinda like not knowing whats around the corner for me...
Tayla Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 for some reason the concept of being a firetruck ( ohh Firemen would be on me...err ummm wrong forum for that talk!) Struck me as funny! Thanks for that image! Okay for the poster- Since creativity is your guide, its highly unlikely that you'll want sales. Unless you can be a creative marketer, and basically fabricate stories to put food on your table. Its not a career I would recommend. Usually a creative type does not want to be in a 9-5 job or anything that requires rules/regulations. Its why you are creative! You let the thoughts flow and create things on the fly! You are a visionary! So take that skill and natural talent and seek careers that meet that criterea. Music producers, cartoonist, writers, theater productions ( especially set designers) , animation, those things come to mind. Now what I want to be when I grow up....I already am. How cool is that! I fell into my career by sheer accident! From a bad situation came such goodness!
