The basics are: we dated at the beginning of the year for about 2 months, it was very intense and amazing, but I broke it off because it was moving quickly and being newly single I was scared, left for a trip, realized I loved her and came back to tell her and she was dating someone new.

I have tried to get her back for months, but obviously she's in a new relationship. She contacted me today on Facebook (we are not friends on there, so she had to have been looking for me) to wish me a happy birthday. We have exchaged personal emails at times, so why she contacted me on Facebook is a mystery. We haven't spoken in months and now I was just getting to the point of truly giving up and focus on moving on.

The message shook me up and it made me really happy, but I know she is still with her girlfriend, so it saddens me as well.

I don't know what to make of it. She knows that I care for her deeply and she hasn't reciprocated, so this is messing with my head...and heart.

To be completely honest, I wouldn't look too much into that. All she did was wish you a Happy Birthday. I know that you want so much for it to mean something completely different, but I can guarantee you, that it doesn't. I understand how you must be feeling right now, but the best advice that I can give you, is to not over analyze it. She is with someone else. I suggest you stay in no contact with her until you have fully moved on. If, one day, she realizes that she made some huge mistake and really wants you back, you will get more than a Happy Birthday message from her. I'm sorry, but it's the truth.
