How do you define being in a serious relationship? What IS serious?

I've been casually seeing a woman romantically for the last 3 to 4 months or so. We both really enjoy each others company and have a great romantic and physical attraction.

We don't live in the same town so we only see each other once or twice a week. We both are busy with our new lives so availability is touch and go. Also we've been keeping it quiet for now. We have mutual friends, and I know her ex and he'd make a stink. Eventually that won't matter but it's still a fairly recent breakup (a few months).

We're both four to five months out of long term relationships. I'm a little ahead of her. I'm ready to be more open. She wants to keep it quiet because she's not yet sure she wants to be in a "serious" relationship and doesn't want to make things weird with friends while we take it slow - though to be honest, I think they all suspect it anyway. Right now it's just a small circle that knows we're interested in each other.

Neither of us are seeing anyone else, though she said she'd understand if I wanted to date while we go slow since she's not yet ready for a relationship. We're intimate once every week or two (depending on the circumstances of us seeing each other), we kiss in private, quietly flirt around others, both have talked about future relationship possibilities, and talk everyday.

So at what point is a "relationship" "serious" regardless of what you label it? This goes not just for my situation but for dating in general.

I'd say it's when there's open communication on both sides. There's a mutual connection (physical and otherwise). You're seeing each other exclusively. You talk about the future (and your views agree). I'm sure I'm missing something, but that's what immediately came up.
