boldjack Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 What you say is very true,Lyss. Not everyone has the same level of interest in other cultures, as you do. Or as I do. I think that what offends me is the arrogance that we English-Speakers have, concerning the Languages and accents of others. We sometimes think that they are cute, or funny, sometimes we make jokes about them ( I am as guilty as anyone) and proceed, in the innocent, arrogant sureness of our linguistic and cultural superiority. My Aunt is from Scotland. When i was a young boy I used to love to hear her talk, I thought it was so funny. I have often wondered how she put up with such a tiresome thing. Good-hearted, I suppose. BTW, when someone makes jokes and flippant remarks about our accents or languages, they aren't very funny, except to the teller. I am both an Indian, and a southerner, and I heard them all. Thanks Soul Bear for letting me rant.
Chubbi Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I work in a bookstore, and the romance section has a more than generous amount of Scottish themed stories. It is all about 'taming highlanders' and 'mac______' clans, 'the highlander's woman' and so on. Pictures of men in kilts with women draping all over them. I'm not sure what it is, but the romance crowd really likes their Scots, or rather the average American woman's romanticized misconception of the Scots. You'd think everyone over there lived in huge estates with a castle, and regularly had death matches with other clans and such. Lol! This is so true! I know because I'm buying one of these tomorrow!
BenThereDunThat Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Correct me if I'm wrong. But isn't Rod Stewart from Scotland? He considers himself as such, right?
Citizen Erased Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I don't really think much about Scottish men. Now Irish men...
BenThereDunThat Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 You know who I think is hot? Robert Carlyle. Or however you spell his name. From the Full Monty? When he tells his son "I love you, you little bugger." Oh.my.god.
whichwayisup Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Luka from ER. Serbian Dr. HOT HOT HOT. Accent and all!
stepka Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 Two good reasons to love Scottish men: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GAgm8sZ5mo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MguVVnUgwnY A story about Scotsmen: my family and I were on a round the world trip in '07 and were finishing up in Paris. There was a huge football game (remember, this is soccer for Americans) and there must have been 50,000 drunk Scotsmen in the city that week and it was amusing to watch them get drunk under the Eiffel Tower--all with their kilts on and shopping carts full of liquor. Of course we made the usual speculations about what do the Scots wear under their kilts, and then my daughter yelled, "Mom, they don't wear anything under their kilts--one of them just mooned us!" They were truly a lively bunch of guys and they made our trip to Paris even more colorful.
underpants Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 what is it? Because they are not Crrraaaaaaap.
Saxis Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I don't really think much about Scottish men. Now Irish men... You have any Irish in you, CE?
shadowplay Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 You have any Irish in you, CE? No, and she doesn't want any. Well, maybe she does.
Author Soul Bear Posted August 14, 2009 Author Posted August 14, 2009 Because they are not Crrraaaaaaap. Would tend not to disagree with that :lmao: Accents are sexy, but it's not just that, the difference of culture makes for a really interesting journey...
Saxis Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 No, and she doesn't want any. Well, maybe she does. Spoilsport...
Author Soul Bear Posted August 14, 2009 Author Posted August 14, 2009 No, and she doesn't want any. Well, maybe she does. LOL I was going to say that pretty much too:laugh:
boldjack Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I would completely agree, SB. The cultural differences are what makes personal interaction, interesting. If everybody spoke and acted the same, culturally, how boring would that be.
D-Lish Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I have to say I love the accent. Irish and Scottish accents are sexy to me. I dated a guy from Ireland while he was here on a visa for a year and I just found the accent charming as hell!
butcher's hook Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I LOVE Scotts for their sense of humour, the men are crazy sexy and the accent is awesome!! They are just cool all around. In my experience I have yet to meet a Scott I don't like.
