Brady_to_Moss Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 How often will you go up to strangers and start chatting?
Thaddeus Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 All the time. Men, women, regardless of appearance. Literally, every single day.
runner Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 i don't approach random strangers just for small talk, that's lame. but i will chat up whomever is around me if i have something to comment on, or if i have a question about something. so my answer is: whenever the opportunity presents itself.
GorillaTheater Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Fairly often. I enjoy getting to know people or simply shooting the sh*t. It can be hit or miss; sometimes folks are obviously not that interested in having a conversation. That's okay too.
Peanut9330 Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Very often I’m very friendly and like to make small talk
Author Brady_to_Moss Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 If you see a pretty girl or an attractive man...what % of the time will you try and get a number or just talk to them?
GorillaTheater Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 If you see a pretty girl or an attractive man...what % of the time will you try and get a number or just talk to them? Ah, now you're casting a somewhat different scenario. "Attractive", at least in the conventional sense, doesn't play any role in who I chat up. And I never try to get a number. Unless it's from a guy interested in selling his foreign coin collection.
Thaddeus Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 If you see a pretty girl or an attractive man...what % of the time will you try and get a number or just talk to them?Well, it depends on the context. I have zero problem in approaching an attractive woman at, say, a grocery store but of course it depends on what else is going on. If she's got a hive of kids milling about and hollering for candy, or she's obviously in a rush or rattled, or there's a man accompanying her, then I won't. But if she appears to be single and taking her time in the produce section, and I'm not rushed to get out of there, I'll probably say hello. Most of the time the conversation might only be a couple of sentences. But once in a while I'll get a date that way. Not often, but often enough that it's worth a chance.

Un-Conventional Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I rarely "chat up" people whether man or woman/attractive or not because #1 im a shy person and #2 because I hate random small talk because sometimes the conversation is more awkward than the awkward silence. Granted when someone engages me in small talk I response because I'm not a jerk. Maybe if someone actually said something I was interested in I would not dislike random small talk so much, but I'm more of a speak when something need to be said type person. But I guess random "chat ups" are necessary to meet new people.

I'm not trying to be rude- I'll just deem the minimal amount of conversation. "How are you?" "Fine" and I'll keep going. Won't think twice about it. I'm working on it.
MissJoness Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I used to be very shy. But now, I even intrude on other people's conversation if they say something that interests me, I start to hijack the convo a bit.
xpaperxcutx Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I'm not very conversationally social. I hardly talk to strangers unless I need to ask for directions or a question. I'm part of the new generation that prefer to listen to their ipods and avoid people at all costs.
laRubiaBonita Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 i talk to random folks pretty often... in line at the store, in the neighborhood, waiting in an office, waiting at a bar..... i also smile at most people i see, just cause... not a big cheesy smile or anything, but a smile with my eyes and a pleasant look on my face. thats would want to see... so why not share it. and i make this contact with such a variety of people- old, young, any race, any creed..... every body deserves the same respect i expect from them.
JohnnyBlaze Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I don't do it as often as I should. I'm way too shy. I'd love to be able to just walk up to some cute stranger and chat her up, but I never have the words to start.
Thaddeus Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I don't do it as often as I should. I'm way too shy. I'd love to be able to just walk up to some cute stranger and chat her up, but I never have the words to start. How about starting with, "Hello." One of the reasons I chat up folks so much, from young hotties to elderly folk, is to keep the fear that I used to have at bay. I used to be painfully shy and once in a while that shyness wells up inside me. It takes a conscious, considerable effort to get past it. Thing is, once I actually get out and start meeting people, that shyness tends to wither. And who knows, I might end up with a new friend or a date. What's the worst that can happen? Well, I guess if they pulled out an Uzi or a flamethrower and nailed you with a few squirts of napalm and leave to you an untimely, twitching demise in the frozen food section of the grocery store... but unless you live in some parts of the southern US, that's probably not gonna happen.
