Can my GP prescribe prozac or do i have to see a Psych.?

i used to take prozac, and i think i really need to be back on it. it's not that i am 'depressed' necessarily- i just need some help with dealing with some things in my head...... i am a little ocd among other things......

any MD can prescribe any medication but some don't cause its not their specialty. if your GP has experience with prescribing SSRIs then he will...some GPs may want you to see a specialist, also known as a "shrink"

Like alpha stated any MD can do it. However, there are newer and sometimes better SSRIs out there. A psych would have a better grasp on these, because that is their specialty.

yeah.... i will ask him. i wouldn't mind going to see a shrink again- i think i could use a 'tune up', but honestly i know the problems i need to tackle, i just think i could do it better with the help of an old friend.

My wife says the combo of psych meds and talk therapy really worked well for her. She took Prozac and had a couple years of counseling before she met me. She certainly was the more neutral and level-headed one in our marriage, looking back. So much so that I saw her as a flat-line. She did comment that the psych meds kind of deadened her, even after discontinuing. They also affected her ability to orgasm.

IMO, if you want a tune up, I'd see a psych to find out what new meds and methodologies are out there now. The science of the brain is expanding exponentially. Good luck :)
