Do good looks pay dividends without any effort?

Recommended Posts

Young or older as he is right now, he's still spastic. I don't understand his appeal, just like I don't understand the appeal of Leonardo DiCaprio.

I' agree with you about DiCaprio, but that's because he has a baby face and a sleazy personality.

Haven't seen enough of Laurie to make a judgment on his personality.

Lord, that man is goofy looking.

Sort of like Al Bundy!

I guess he was a late bloomer. Just goes to show, aging can be very sexy!!!

I don't see what's so wrong with that woman. I also don't see why it is less superficial to critizise somebody else's looks than to favor students who are better looking.

OT: beauty is one factor. If you are more outwardly appealing, you will be ahead of someone who isn't. Same as somebody who is smart will be in a better position than an idiot.

Never even thought of DiCaprio as a man.

I can't believe you admit to being more keen as a teacher to teach the good-looking students. That's pretty disgusting.

I didn't say I expend more effort on the good-looking students; I try to make an equal effort with all students in my class, because that's my job. However I will admit that when glancing around the class my eyes linger longer on the handsome guys, and spending extra time tutoring the good looking students is rather more pleasurable. For the same reason, I prefer it when the handsome young maintenance man comes out to fix things in my house rather than the older guy who works for the same company, and I - as well as all the other ladies in my office -prefer it when the hot young technician comes out to repair the computers at work :)

I think I foresee a Debra LaFave / Mary Kaye Letourneau thing about to happen. Just make sure to film it and put it on YouPorn for me, OK?

Yes, looks count for a lot but can also be a trap if a person is not careful. Doors can open more easily but I do think that it can be more difficult to be taken seriously.. especially on the dating scene when one is very attractive.

Overall though, life is what you make it.

Take care,

Eve xx

The only things that have paid dividends in my life are things that I've worked really hard for. I was earning over $100K in a high flying career by the time I was 23, owned a really nice apartment in central london, had a really amazing looking girlfriend - these things came in a bat of an eyelid. Was I happy? No I really wasn't because the point was I didn't appreciate those things because I didn't work particularly hard to earn them. Where was the challenge?

I think if you float through life picking up things without really doing anything for them you're going to feel rather empty and unfulfilled. Look at at the celebs that have ended up with addictions and mania, looks, money, fame, what are their dividends? A drug addiction, hangers on and friends that don't care about them? Are these the sorts of doors you really want to open? No thankyou.

I find tutoring the more adept students pleasurable because they challenge me and ask tricky questions and make me think and learn things. I find tutoring the struggling students pleasurable because of the joy they get when they have a eureka moment and realise they can actually do something. I tend to find my eyes lingering on the students that are in a state of flux trying to work whether they're finding the material too soft or difficult. No offence, but If I ever started fixating on looks, I would leave my job tomorrow.

I have a special place in my heart for the "underdogs" in my classes. They are so interesting and need my help more than the others. That's where I get my reward as a teacher.

Kittens need love too. :(

I agree that there are upsides and downsides to good looks. Generalizations are the worst.

I agree with this totally. I have always been ugly, ever since I was a child. If anything I have gotten worse over the years. It really does affect not only who you can attract, but it also affects jobs, school basically your whole life. You just have to make do with what you have I guess.
