Everyone's feeling the pinch of the economy. We're still human beings first and foremost and as humans, we still like to socialize, date and keep ourselves entertained. This thread is dedicated to coming up with fun activities that are low cost - especially those that can improve your life.

Instead of joining a gym - get involved in a running group, swimming organization or home gym/community gym program. Make sure to check with a physician before beginning any training program.

What's in it for you? Savings. Commercial gyms can cost you anywhere from $40 to $100 per month - some gyms use contracts that hold you to payment.

The cost of getting started in running is the cost of running shoes. You can find a decent pair of running shoes from $50+ and if you find a good pair, it will last you for many, many months.

Is your partner like minded? What a better way then for the two of you to train together. Going for a run is still one of the cheapest couple activities.

Swimming is an excellent form of excercise, because its a total body resistance workout in addition to a cardio workout. Swimmer's highs feel different than runner's highs - something you have to exeperience for yourself. Swimming is a good couple's excercise, because swimming in pairs is generally safer than swimming alone. The cost of swimming at a local pool, lake or ocean (for advanced swimmers) is the cost of parking (if any) or the entry fee at the door.

Some communities offer community/recreational fitness centers. Entry to these is relatively cheap - while they may not have the most advanced equipment, the best workouts are often done with free weights, kettle bells, jump ropes, rowing machines and jumping boxes.

While its nice and convenient to go out to a restaraunt, it is much cheaper to eat at home. In addition, you can make the things you like to eat, the way you want them to taste. Maybe you can't cook? Find a friend or couple that can and offer to buy some of the ingredients in exchange for their cooking.

A good recipe site can be found at the following link

With enough practice (or right person doing it), you can cook champagne quality food at beer prices!

A buddy of mine, well versed in Italian cooking, found an international grociery store in the area and spent around $30 to buy enough ingredients to make a really nice salad, baked zitit with meat sauce and some kind of strudel - for 4.

We ate good quality italian food for $7.25 per person.

A restaraunt that makes food at no better or worse quality would have required us to spend $20- $25 per person.

Have friends/dates over, divide the labor of prepairing, cooking, setting up dinner and show a movie afterwards. Netflix are a good cheap movie rental program as are the $.99 red box titles.
