Lauriebell82 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 To the married people..how long was your engagement?
Enema Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Dated 5 years, engaged for a further 2 years. Now married for 1.
Thornton Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I'm not married, but I don't see the point of a long engagement unless you really need that time in order to save up the funds for a wedding. An engagement is a promise to marry, so why not just get married already?! I know some couples who have been engaged for like 10 years or something, and some who got engaged with no intention of ever marrying... they treat their engagement as if it's a real commitment, which of course it's not... engagement is the promise to commit and marriage is the commitment, end of story.
Trialbyfire Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 In my first marriage, less than a year. He was in a hurry. This time, it will be 1.5+ years. He would have been fine with an elopement from Day 1.
Author Lauriebell82 Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 Once engaged, five months. That was long enough. 5 months would have been perfect. Or 6. My mom and fiance were against having a winter wedding, or else I would have taken a February date.
silktricks Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 "Dated" 9 years Cohabited 3 years Once we decided to marry - 1 week Married 23 years

Did you just a civil ceremony? I'm starting to think we should have just had a tiny wedding after like like 5 months or so.
giotto Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 dated 2 years, cohabitated 3 years, married 19 years...

I completely agree. It should be the time it takes to plan and execute the wedding, not another stage in a relationship. Met in April, engaged in December, married the next April--a year and a day after our first date.
laRubiaBonita Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 got engaged feb. 1 and got married sept. 13 of the same year....... we dated just shy of a year before getting engaged.

Didn't invite anyone, we really didn't want anyone to even know so they wouldn't treat us differently...
sb129 Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Married 14 months after we got engaged, and we had been together for a year before we got engaged. Have been married for nearly 9 months, all going well so far.

AlektraClementine Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Dated a year and 1/2 Got engaged in May - Getting married in April or May next year The purpose of our long-ish engagement is to save money as we're paying for the wedding ourselves.
GoodOnPaper Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Engaged 14 months. A little leisurely, but we were already living together and we had to save up money -- we paid for most of our own wedding.
sb129 Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 I thought you were engaged for a shorter amount of time then that! I guess it does go fast! Well we had alot of other things to think about in that time- we moved countries and did some travelling and then had to set up in the new country, find jobs and somewhere to live etc, so that took up far more energy and planning time than the wedding. Which is why its probably a good idea to not focus all your spare time and attention on the wedding- I have been telling you to get a new hobby for ages LB, it will fulfil so many things for you. It will give you something else to focus on, and that something will continue after the wedding, and it will be good for your independence AND it will help you meet new people.
Eve Posted August 8, 2009 Posted August 8, 2009 Engaged at 3 months, married at 9 months. We have been together for nearly 11 years having just celebrated 10 years of marriage. Take care, Eve xx

Actually I signed up for this women's self defense class at the community college. I figure that would be a good form of exercise and some useful moves if I ever get myself in a dangerous situation. Plus it's an all women class so hopefully I will make some new friends.
Author Lauriebell82 Posted August 9, 2009 Author Posted August 9, 2009 twenty days Wow!! What kind of wedding did you have? JOP?
Holding-On Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Wow!! What kind of wedding did you have? JOP? A potluck in my mother's backyard. Very easy. Actually my 85 year old step-grandmother said it was the nicest wedding she'd ever been to.
