tigressA Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Congrats for stepping outside of the break-up thread
Author Thomas X Forever Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 I got tired of beating everyone to death with the DSM-IV.
Author Thomas X Forever Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 Haha my apologies:) Might as well say what it is out loud. DSM-IV is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Fourth Edition. It is the bible of psychology. What scares me, though, is all these up and coming people who take psychology, and don't know what the DSM-IV is. That's like a devout Christian who hasn't heard of Jesus But yeah, anyway, for those people who probably think I'm insane for making this topic... it's just a joke! But tigress, you are pretty nonetheless. Lol.
dreamergrl Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 If that's you in your avatar - feel free to make a pit stop in Denver :bunny::cool:

tigressA Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Haha, thanks for the compliment So can I safely assume that you're studying psychology? Or is it just a recreational interest?
Author Thomas X Forever Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 Good question tigress! Um. Well, I love psychology enough that I would say it is a hobby/recreation of mine. But it is my major. I am aiming for a PhD in it in the next few years. How bout you, I see you're listed as a student. What do you study?
tigressA Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I'm a History major. I specialize in European history; it's always been closer to my heart than American. I love reading up on the royal houses--diplomacy and dysfunction, inbreeding, constant war, crushing oppression, the myth of royal blood. But I'm not planning on teaching, which is what everyone asks me.

tigressA Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Thanks! If you ever have some free time I could tell you about a lot of crazy historical figures...makes for good entertainment. So is your interest in psychology general or do you specialize in something--like clinical, developmental, experimental, etc?
Thornton Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Can I join the genius thread with all you clever academics please? My PhD is in computer psychology (human-computer type stuff).

I double majored in history (and accounting), but my focuses were U.S. legal history and racial politics and the state.
quankanne Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 hey! where are the pictures? Gotta give us old married ladies something to look forward to, too!

I double majored in history (and accounting), but my focuses were U.S. legal history and racial politics and the state. These are among my favorites (I tend to focus more on individual biographies of those I find most fascinating): The Affair of the Poisons: Murder, Infanticide, and Satanism at the Court of Louis XIV by Anne Somerset The Life and Death of Anne Boleyn by Eric Ives Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser Henry VIII: The King and His Court by Alison Weir The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir The following are "easy reads"--informative but also extremely entertaining, like something you'd take with you to the beach: Sex With Kings: 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Rivalry and Revenge and Sex With the Queen: 900 Years of Vile Kings, Virile Lovers, and Passionate Politics by Eleanor Herman A Treasury of Royal Scandals: The Shocking True Stories of History's Wickedest, Weirdest, Most Wanton Kings, Queens, Tsars, Popes, and Emperors by Michael Farquhar

tigressA Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 No problem. Those books labeled "historical fiction" are entertaining too, but of course you have to remain aware of the "fiction" tag. A lot of those books I've read can be confusing, especially if you have little to no background on royalty. The last books I listed are good "beginners" books--they feature information on the most notorious royal families. They focus on scandal, but they're also handy for some basic background info. If you're into war/politics/religion, checking out any solid tomes on The Wars of the Roses, the 100 Years War (between 2 French royal houses for the French throne), the Wars of Religion in the 16th and 17th centuries following the Protestant Reformation, the English Civil War in the mid-17th century that led to the execution of King Charles I (but then ended in the restoration of the throne to his eldest son, Charles II), would be very worth your time as well. Amazon.com has a good selection; just using any of the names of the wars as a search term is sufficient for finding material.

Fay Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Sex With Kings: 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Rivalry and Revenge ZOMG you actually know about this book?!?! In the year that I've owned it I virtually haven't been able to put it down! It's sitting in the passenger seat of my car right now!! I have a weird craze for the history of royal mistresses. You're my new best friend.
