Strawberry Cane Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Hello everyone, I don't know if this is the right place to be posting this, but... I've been watching that show on HBO called Big Love, about a modern day polygamist, and have been finding it very interesting. I was just wondering if there is anybody who practices polygamy in the fourms, and if they do, if they would be willing to share their modern day expereinces. I guess my main questions are, Is this show realistic? and What is it like sharing a husband? Lastly, what about women having more then one husband? Does it work the other way around? I don't know anything about the beliefs behind polygamy, but I just was curious. I hope no one finds my asking too abrupt but I figured if I could ask this question anywhere, it would be on this fourm. Thanks for your time. And please don't post any rude or criticizing comments. The reason I am posting here is because I figured it would be a safe envrionment. I appreciate that. -Strawberry
quankanne Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 hmmmm ... I've been on these boards awhile, and to my knowledge I don't recall there being any posters who practice polygamy. polyamory (also known as wife-swapping/swinging) yes. Polygamy, no. Though I'd be interested in learning more about how they make it work when a relationship with just ONE person can be more than enough of a challenge to deal with on some days
CarrieT Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I don't (heck, I can't even get a date), but I have three sets of friends in those relationships: 1. Two couples who co-habitate 2. Two bi-sexual women who live with one man 3. One man who lives with two non- bisexual women. I am closest to Group #1. In fact, the husband in one of the two married couples is business partner of the wife of the other couple. But all four are open about their relationships with one another. I think the woman-having-more-than-one-husband scenario is extremely rare. In the case of #2 and #3, both men are only legally married to one of the women, although all three of the groups above have gone through "ceremonies" with friends and families to solemnify their relationships openly.
laRubiaBonita Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 why is polygamy illegal? is it something to do with church and state?
quankanne Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 that might be the cover story to protect the men from when all their partners are PMSing at the same time
Mr. Lucky Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 that might be the cover story to protect the men from when all their partners are PMSing at the same time True. It's hard enough to keep one wife happy ! How does one deal with three ? Mr. Lucky
justpassingthrough Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 why is polygamy illegal? is it something to do with church and state? While, initially (thinking back to Utah's difficulty joining the Union) it was, the modern problem is that of inheritance. In my opinion, anyone who thinks polygamy is a good idea should live in an Islamic country for a while (as I do) and see how it doesn't work in practice. The "if he ain't got four, he's got room for more" mentality puts women, married women, in a position she wouldn't be in otherwise. Just because it's legal doesn't mean women want or welcome it. The idea that her husband is always looking to expand his harem is disheartening, hence the primary reason for large families - if his life is expensive, he can't afford to take more wives and have more children. It's the only way she has any control over her life. Hence the reason populations are exploding in Islamic countries. Then there's the 24 year old girls, desperate to get married, with an outlook that says, "Hey! He can have four. What's the problem?" to contend with. Would you want your husband bringing another wife home just because he can? When it's legal, there doesn't have to be any discussion or agreement about it because it's a fact of life. These countries have sorted out inheritance laws and they're spelled out within the religion itself. Males, almost exclusively, inherit, and not necessarily women but their male children, which is yet another reason to have babies ... lots and lots of babies.
Vet Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 why is polygamy illegal? is it something to do with church and state? It's more to do with the tendency of men to exploit and coerce women (and a lot of times children) in polygynous marriages. There may even be one case in ten that all parties are completely willing, but the ability of the state to protect the other nine becomes impossible.
Chrome Barracuda Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 True. It's hard enough to keep one wife happy ! How does one deal with three ? Mr. Lucky LMAO! true talk! Some people can never be happy... with just one.
