I go to a particular coffee shop pretty regularly. While the people who work there are always friendly and try to be chatty, I've never gotten to know any of them. I'm really only there long enough to wait in one line to order, and the other to pick up my drink. And I really can never think of anything witty to say during the few seconds I'm there ordering/picking up. Not to mention whatever I say is going to be heard by everyone else in the store, which makes me feel conspicuous. So I just conduct my business and move on.

 

There is a particular girl who works there, and I admit I generally hope she's working when I go there. I've never said more than hello to her. Today I asked her name, and she smiled and told me. Then before I could tell her mine, she revealed she already knew it. That was a bit of a surprise. Only a couple people there know my name, and that's mostly because they took the time to read it off my credit card.

 

So I guess that's encouraging. Little steps, right?
