shadowsfall Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 So I was hospitalized a couple nights ago after waking up at 3 a.m. with an excruciatingly relentless pain in my chest. After minutes on the floor and excessive dry heaving, I had to drive myself to the E.R. hoping I wouldn't pass out from the pain. Turns out I might have a stomach ulcer, although I've yet to see a specialist to confirm. Since then I've been on medication and have only experienced mild onsets at times. I've made some healthier lifestyle changes, particularly with my diet and regular excercise (I do not have a weight problem other then that I could probably gain a few pounds). I feel miserable though! I mean I can't drink at all anymore, even moderately with my buddies. I feel like everytime I go out I'm going to be the one obsessing over what I can/can not drink or eat. Sucks too because I'm only 24. I don't know how to deal with this right now.
laRubiaBonita Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 are you on an antibiotic? i tested positive for the Helicobacter-pylori virus (which can casue ulcers) when i was 18.... i was put on antibiotics and it's gone, i am fine now. although i do think i have mild reflux- which cretainly can cause the "chest pain" feeling.... i thought i was gonna die one night, i hurt so bad. OTC meds for heartburn- like prilosec and zantac work pretty well... as does waiting at least 2 hours after eating to lay down. good luck!
nobody's girl Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Not to sound like an old person here, but you should watch what you eat and drink - even at 24 - because it can affect you later in life. Have you considered apple cider vinegar? Oddly enough, it can help with stomach problems. The acid in the vinegar neutralizes the acid in your stomach. You can read more about it here: http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/ulcer.html I add a little apple cider vinegar to the big mug of water I drink every day was able to stop taking Prilosec altogether. I sometimes need an antacid, but it's nothing compared to what it was like before I started taking the ACV.

Now, I do know that an upper GI series normally will show most ulcers. Also, ulcers are caused by a bacteria and if you have that bacteria the way to treat them from what I understand is with a course of antibiotics. I hope you feel better. Mea:)
Author shadowsfall Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 Thank you for the suggestions and support. I am not currently on any anti-biotics just Nexium. Nor have I been to an internal specialist yet but am in the process of scheduling an appointment with one this week for an endoscopy. I'm really hoping that it is just some bacteria that can be cleared up, so I'll be crossing my fingers. I'm just a little confused whether I still need a referral for an internal specialist from my primary doctor (HMO) because I already have one from the E.R. Doctor. Does anyone know how that works? In other words can I use the E.R. doc's referral and go directly to the specialist If I am currently tied to another primary physician? I'm really disliking my primary physician after they didn't returned my call for an appointment after describing the symptoms I was having before my E.R. visit. I'd prefer not to even deal with them at this point in time.
