Dexter Morgan Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Ok, so i do alot of zottoman curls, pulls ups, etc, for the biceps. but one of my arms aches at the elbow and I'm afraid of doing any damage. I didn't work out for 3 weeks to see if it would heal, but i am wondering if I have a case of tennis elbow. Anyone have this problem, see a doctor, or anything where the pain went away? If it is a matter of refraining from weight lifting for a while, how much time is needed? is it the tendons? joints? doctor told me just to take ibuprofen, but doesn't do much good and even took it every day while letting things heal. I was hoping other bicep exercises would be just as good, but really easy on the joints. Or do I need to lay off working out for more than a month?
whichwayisup Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Try icing it and even using some heat on it. I find when I do yoga too much my elbows really hurt and feel tight and abit painful. Anyway, if it doesn't get better, see your Dr just to make sure everything is okay.
Author Dexter Morgan Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 ya, got a Dr apptmt next week. Gotta do something before my guns go from 44's turn to 38's
clv0116 Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I got tennis elbow from a combination of work, computer gaming (mouse use), pullups and curls. It's easily fixed most of the time but it takes time to heal.
wuggle Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 If these are the curls where you twist round at the top before lowering then really could be bone or ligament damage, why not try just doing free form curls and allow a big cheat, my guess is it's the twist rather than the bicep excercise itself, always found this a very un-natural feeling excercise. Re the Ibuprofen, my advise don't touch the stuff, totally f*cks your stomach lining up, paracetamol no better, I swear it makes joint pain twice as bad when it wears off.
clv0116 Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Naprosyn or Aleve (Naproxen Sodium) is a good goto for inflammation.
way_2_tired Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 ibuprofen works fine for inflammation. it usually only hurts your stomach if you take it quite frequently, or in high doses. or you take it on an empty stomach. It is best taken with food.
Land Shark Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Repetitive motion exercises put a lot of stress on the tendons. When a tendon is overstressed it can get partially torn and you'll have tendinitis. Tendons don't get blood flow like muscles do. So they don't heal easily. If you catch it within the first month or two, you can treat it with rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Research the acronym "RICE". It will take at least a couple weeks to heal. I would add that you need to massage it correctly and take anti-inflammatories. The longer you wait to treat it, i.e. the longer you keep on lifting and stressing it, the longer it will take to heal. If you wait long enough without treating it, it will heal itself, but with a lot of "crossed fibers" and scar tissue. The weakness and pain will persist, but the inflammation will be gone. Then ice and anti-inflammatories will be of little use. This is when you have tendonosis. This can be a chronic condition and extremely difficult to get rid of. I developed tendonitis in my forearm in October of last year. I ignored it until December when I got an incorrect diagnosis of tennis elbow. I didn't start physical therapy until April. At that point it was pretty much a tendonosis problem. I am only now able to curl 12lb weights without re-injuring the tendon and setting back the progress I've made. Bottom line: don't f*ck around with tendonitis. Whatever you did to injure it: stop doing it. If that means your "guns" turn into pea-shooters for a while. Well that's better than having to give them up for good. And you risk that. Pain like this is your body's way of saying "I need a break".
